Saint Louis University Baguio: Admission Requirements and Process

Saint Louis University in Baguio screens undergraduate freshmen with the SLU College Entrance Examination, written as SLU-CEE. The sentence that matters most in SLU's own admission policy is not about the exam, though. It is this: applicants must pass the SLU-CEE and must qualify within the slots duly determined for their chosen course.

That second clause turns SLU admission into a ranked competition per programme rather than a pass-or-fail threshold. You are not only trying to clear a bar, you are trying to place inside a number that SLU does not publish.

This post covers what SLU states about the SLU-CEE, the separate tests for transferees and foreign students, the graduate requirements, and one real disagreement between two of the university's own pages that you need to know about before you plan a year around a date. Campus details sit on our Saint Louis University profile, and the programme list is in our SLU Baguio courses offered guide.

The exam windows SLU publishes disagree

This is the most important practical finding in this post, so it goes near the top.

Saint Louis University maintains two admission policy pages with almost identical wording. They differ on when the SLU-CEE happens.

SLU pageWhat it says about the SLU-CEEWhat it says about first semester admission
General Admission Requirements and EnrollmentRegistration falls in December or January of the following year; the regular SLU-CEE is conducted during weekends from March up to AprilAdmission for the first semester starts at the middle of July

Both pages are live on slu.edu.ph, both describe the same SLU-CEE, and neither carries a date stamp that would tell you which is current. One of them is very likely a leftover from an older academic calendar. We are not going to guess which.

What to do with that: do not build a plan around either window. Treat the SLU-CEE as a test that SLU schedules once per cycle, announces on the University Registrar's Facebook page and its admissions pages, and closes when it closes. SLU itself points applicants at the URO page for announcements and updates, and it does so on both of the conflicting pages — which is a fair signal that the social feed, not the website copy, is the live source.

The freshman application portal reinforces this. When applications for an academic year close, SLU replaces the form with a plain notice saying the application for that year is closed and telling prospective applicants for the following year to follow the University Registrar's Facebook page for updates. There is no permanent calendar to read.

What the SLU-CEE actually gates

SLU's admission policy for undergraduate freshmen is short enough to state in full effect: all undergraduate freshman applicants must pass the SLU College Entrance Examination and must qualify within the slots duly determined for their chosen course.

Three consequences follow.

Your programme choice changes the difficulty. A slot count is set per course. A programme with high demand and a small intake is harder to enter with the same score than a programme with the reverse. SLU does not publish those numbers, so applicants have no way to calibrate in advance.

A pass is not an admission. You can clear the exam and still not place. This is the same structure state universities use with their own admission tests, and it is why SLU's schools maintain their own Facebook pages — SLU lists the pages for the School of Accountancy, Management, Computing and Information Studies, the School of Engineering and Architecture, the School of Nursing, Allied Health and Biological Sciences, and the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts as places to follow for programme-level information.

Applying early is a strategy, not a formality. When a test is offered over a series of weekends and a portal closes, the applicants who register in the first weeks get more choice about when they sit and more time to react to the result.

If you are preparing for the SLU-CEE, SLU does not publish its coverage or format, so you are preparing generally. Our college entrance exam reviewer guide covers the subject areas Philippine entrance tests have in common, and our roundup of review centres in Baguio covers the local options.

Transferees sit a different test

SLU admits transferees in all courses except Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science. That single exclusion is stated plainly and is easy to miss — if BMLS is your goal, transferring in is not a route.

The transferee sequence is:

  1. Qualifying Examination (QE) — not the SLU-CEE, a separate test
  2. If qualified, a Personality Test
  3. An interview

Foreign students applying as transferees are additionally subject to the English Proficiency Test (EPT) rule.

SLU frames all of this as subject to compliance with pertinent requirements and guidelines, without publishing the document checklist on the same page. That checklist comes from the University Registrar's Office, which is also the office that handles transfer credentials and course crediting.

Graduate programmes

SLU's stated graduate admission rules are about prerequisites rather than tests:

  • The applicant must have finished the prerequisite degree before acceptance to the graduate programme.
  • For a master's degree, the applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognised standing.
  • For a doctorate, the applicant must hold a master's degree in a related field from an institution of recognised standing.

Note that SLU's foreign student section refers to three exam names together — SLU-CEE, QE and GPEE. SLU does not expand GPEE on that page. Graduate applicants should confirm with the School of Advanced Studies whether a graduate entrance examination applies to their programme rather than assuming from the acronym.

Foreign students

SLU sets the most specific timetable of any of its applicant categories, and it is front-loaded.

  • Apply no later than six months before the start of the academic term.
  • Be physically in Baguio City at least four weeks before classes start, so you can sit the English Proficiency Test along with the SLU-CEE, QE or GPEE as applicable, plus the Personality Test.
  • First-time foreign applicants, undergraduate or graduate, must possess satisfactory proficiency in English and pass the EPT, along with the relevant entrance examination and the Personality Test.
  • Before enrolling, foreign students go through preadmission processing at the Student Affairs Office.
  • A valid student visa is required. SLU says there are two options for securing one and directs applicants to the foreign student section of the Registrar's Office for details.

The four-week rule is the operative one. It means a foreign applicant cannot arrive the week before classes and sort admission out on the ground.

What SLU does not publish

Being explicit about the gaps saves people from filling them with forum rumours.

  • No SLU-CEE fee on the general admission pages.
  • No exam coverage, item count or time limit.
  • No cut-off score, for any programme.
  • No slot numbers, even though the slot rule is the deciding mechanism.
  • No freshman document checklist on the admission policy pages — that lives inside the application portal when it is open.
  • No reconciled exam calendar, as covered above.

SLU does publish a route to answers: an Admissions Helpdesk with an email address and phone numbers, the University Registrar's Office Facebook page, and the individual school pages. For anything in the list above, those are the sources — not a blog, including this one.

How SLU compares with other Baguio options

SLU is the largest private university in the city and the slot rule reflects that: demand exceeds intake in the programmes people most want. If you are weighing alternatives, our guides to private schools in Baguio and to entrance exams across the Philippines are the useful comparisons — the second one because SLU's model, a single university-run test plus a per-course quota, is not how every school does it, and knowing that changes where you apply.

One practical piece of advice that follows directly from everything above: because SLU announces its cycle rather than publishing a permanent calendar, and because its two policy pages disagree, follow the University Registrar's Office page from the start of your Grade 12 year. That is the cheapest possible insurance against missing a window that moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SLU entrance exam called?

The SLU College Entrance Examination, which the university writes as SLU-CEE. Saint Louis University states that all undergraduate freshman applicants must pass it. Transferees sit a different test called the Qualifying Examination, and foreign applicants may additionally sit the English Proficiency Test.

Is passing the SLU-CEE enough to get in?

No. SLU states that freshman applicants must pass the SLU-CEE and must qualify within the slots duly determined for their chosen course. That makes admission competitive against other applicants to the same programme, not just against a fixed passing mark.

When is the SLU-CEE held?

Two pages on SLU's own site describe different windows. One says registration falls in December or January with the regular SLU-CEE run on weekends from March to April; the other says the regular SLU-CEE runs on weekends from mid-October to mid-December. Because the university has not reconciled them publicly, treat neither as next cycle's schedule and check the University Registrar's announcements.

How do I apply as a freshman at SLU?

Through the freshman application page on SLU's own portal, which opens and closes per cycle. SLU also publishes a walkthrough video for the application and directs applicants to the University Registrar's Office Facebook page for announcements and updates.

Does SLU accept transferees?

Yes, in all courses except Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science. Transferees must undergo a Qualifying Examination, and if they qualify, they then take a Personality Test and an interview.

What extra steps do foreign students at SLU face?

SLU asks foreign students to apply no later than six months before the start of the academic term and to be in Baguio City at least four weeks before classes begin, so they can sit the English Proficiency Test along with the relevant entrance examination and the Personality Test. They also go through preadmission processing at the Student Affairs Office and must secure a valid student visa.

What are the graduate programme requirements at SLU?

An applicant must have finished the prerequisite degree before acceptance. A master's applicant needs a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognised standing, and a doctorate applicant needs a master's degree in a related field from an institution of recognised standing.

Does SLU publish an SLU-CEE cut-off score?

Not on its public admission pages. SLU states the pass-and-qualify-within- slots rule but does not publish scores, exam coverage, item counts or slot numbers per course. The Admissions Helpdesk and the individual schools are the places to ask.
