Every Senior High School Subject, Listed

TL;DR: The complete Senior High School subject list now lives in DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum, signed 4 June 2026. It has five core subjects, all taken in Grade 11 at 160 hours each, plus electives grouped into five Academic Track clusters and ten Technical-Professional clusters, listed subject by subject in Annex A of the order. Academic electives run 80 or 160 hours; Tech-Pro electives are standardised at 320 hours and each maps to a TESDA Training Regulation. No school offers everything: DO 017 says plainly that schools "are not required to offer all Electives within a cluster." Grade 12 learners in non-pilot schools are still on the 2016 subject list this school year.

If you are trying to plan a programme of study, compare two schools, or work out whether a subject you took still counts, the list below is the current one. It is assembled from Annex A of DO 017, s. 2026 rather than from older summaries, which describe a structure that no longer applies to Grade 11.

The Five Core Subjects

Every learner takes these in Grade 11, regardless of track. Each is 160 hours across one school year.

Core SubjectHours
Effective Communication and Mabisang Komunikasyon160
General Mathematics160
General Science160
Life and Career Skills160

Detail on how these were designed and what they replaced is in our SHS core subjects guide.

Academic Track Electives

The Academic Track has five clusters. Unless noted, each elective is 80 hours and may be taken in Grade 11 or Grade 12.

Field Experience

This cluster is optional for Academic Track learners and is where the practical, off-campus work sits.

Prerequisites matter here. The Arts Apprenticeship subjects each require named arts electives first, In-Campus Field Exposure for Sports requires seven prior Sports cluster subjects, and Work Immersion for the Academic Track requires completion of the prerequisite set under one of the other clusters. Our work immersion and research guide covers what these placements involve in practice.

Technical-Professional Track Electives

Ten clusters. DO 017, s. 2026 standardises every Tech-Pro elective at 320 hours, and states that all of them are aligned to TESDA Training Regulations.

ClusterElectives
Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human CareAesthetic Services (Beauty Care); Caregiving (Adult Care); Caregiving (Child Care); Hairdressing Services

MaritimeMarine Engineering at the Support Level; Marine Transportation at the Support Level; Ships Catering Services

Annex A lists an equivalent TESDA Training Regulation and a National Certificate level against each of these. Most sit at NC II. Carpentry and Manual Metal Arc Welding are listed against both NC I and NC II, Visual Graphic Design and Events Management Services are listed at NC III, and the two Maritime support-level electives are marked non-NC. Check the exact level in Annex A for the specific elective you care about, because that level is what a learner would later be assessed against. Our TESDA NC levels guide explains what those levels mean to an employer.

Work Immersion for the Tech-Pro Track is separate from the electives, runs 320 to 640 hours in Grade 12, and is mandatory for Tech-Pro learners. For Academic Track learners it stays optional.

How Many Subjects a Learner Actually Takes

The list above is a menu, not a schedule. DO 017, s. 2026 sets the totals in its graduation tables:

PathSubjectsHours
Purely Academic Track17 to 202,000
Academic Track with cross-track172,000
Purely Tech-Pro Track8 to 92,080
Tech-Pro Track with cross-track11 to 122,080

The reason a Tech-Pro learner takes so many fewer subjects for slightly more hours is subject size: a Tech-Pro elective is 320 hours where an Academic elective is 80. Both paths carry the same 800 hours of core subjects. Total weekly load is capped at 40 hours either way.

What Your School Will Actually Offer

This is the practical caveat. DO 017 states that clusters "are distinct from strands, as schools are not required to offer all Electives within a cluster, and learners may select Electives across multiple clusters." Existing public senior high schools are automatically authorised to run the new curriculum with no separate permit, and may offer the electives covered by the clusters they already hold permits for. Adding a new Tech-Pro elective still requires the full evaluation, resource verification and approval process under DO 54, s. 2022, including facility standards and teacher National Certificate requirements. Adding an Academic elective inside an already-approved cluster needs no new permit, but moving into a new cluster requires regional office approval.

The result is that two schools in the same city can offer genuinely different menus. Before enrolling, ask for the school list of electives by cluster for the specific grade level, not a general statement that it "offers the Academic Track."

Private schools may also add Institutional Subjects reflecting their philosophy and mission, such as Theology or Christian Living. Under DO 017 these sit on top of the prescribed curriculum, cannot substitute for required core subjects or electives, and must keep total weekly hours within 40.

For the structure this replaced, and which learners are still on it, see our tracks and strands explainer and the wider Strengthened SHS curriculum guide.

Disclaimer: subject lists and elective offerings change through DepEd curriculum guides and clarificatory issuances, and availability is school-specific. Confirm with the school and against Annex A of DO 017, s. 2026 before making enrolment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the official list of Senior High School subjects?

Annex A of DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum, carries the complete list of electives by cluster, with hours, grade level and prerequisites for each. The five core subjects appear earlier in the same order, in Table 1. Download the order from deped.gov.ph rather than relying on any summary, including this one.

How many subjects does a Senior High School learner actually take?

It depends on the track and how the electives are sized. DO 017, s. 2026 puts a purely Academic Track learner at 17 to 20 subjects totalling 2,000 hours, an Academic learner using the cross-track option at 17 subjects, and a Technical-Professional learner at 8 to 9 subjects totalling 2,080 hours, because Tech-Pro electives are 320 hours each rather than 80.

What are the five core subjects?

Effective Communication and Mabisang Komunikasyon, General Mathematics, General Science, Life and Career Skills, and Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino. Each runs 160 instructional hours across one school year, and all five are taken in Grade 11 only.

Does every school offer every subject on the list?

No. DO 017, s. 2026 is explicit that clusters "are distinct from strands, as schools are not required to offer all Electives within a cluster." Existing senior high schools may offer the electives covered by their current permits, and adding new Tech-Pro electives still requires evaluation, resource verification and approval under DO 54, s. 2022. Ask a specific school what it actually runs.

Can a school offer a subject that is not on the list?

Yes, as Unique Electives. DO 017, s. 2026 defines these as school or community-developed electives designed around local, cultural, contextual or community studies. A school intending to offer electives beyond the national list must submit to the schools division office and regional office and secure prior approval from the Bureau of Curriculum Development.

Are the old subjects like Practical Research and Empowerment Technologies gone?

Not entirely. Empowerment Technologies survives as a STEM cluster elective, and Practical Research 1 and 2 map to Research 1 and Research 2 under the Field Experience cluster in the equivalency matrix in Annex F.2. Grade 12 learners in non-pilot schools during SY 2026-2027 are still taking the 2016 subject list in full.

Do Technical-Professional subjects still lead to a TESDA certificate?

The alignment is still there. DO 017, s. 2026 states that all Tech-Pro electives are aligned with TESDA Training Regulations, that Annex A lists the equivalent Training Regulation and National Certificate level for each elective, and that schools must ensure teachers or trainers hold valid and appropriate National Certificates for the qualification being taught. Certification itself is still a separate TESDA assessment.
