West Visayas State University admits undergraduates through a single university-wide admission examination held once per cycle, applied for through a campus-level application module rather than one central portal. Those two facts shape everything else: miss the sitting and there is no second one, and apply to the wrong campus and your paperwork goes to the wrong registrar.
There is a complication worth stating before anything else, because it affects how much you should trust what you read about WVSU online — including this post.
A note on sourcing
When this guide was written, the main wvsu.edu.ph site — the admission page, the general undergraduate admission guidelines page and the online application process page — returned a bot-protection challenge and could not be read. What we could reach on WVSU's own servers was:
- Two WVSUCAT guideline PDFs hosted under
wvsu.edu.ph/files/pdf/WVSUCAT/, written for academic years 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 - The applicant access module for the Pototan campus at
iuis-pototan.wvsu.edu.ph
So this post describes the structure of WVSU admission, which those documents establish clearly, and it does not restate current fees, dates or cut-off scores, because we could not verify any of them at the source. Anything you find quoting a specific WVSU testing fee or cut-off number is very likely reading one of those two old PDFs.
That matters. The AY 2018-2019 sheet sets out an application filing fee, a testing fee, postage stamp requirements for mailed applications and a single numeric cut-off score for the main campus. Every one of those is from a cycle that ended years ago. Do not budget from them.
The exam, and what it is called now
WVSU's own hosted guidelines call the test the West Visayas State University College Admission Test (WVSUCAT). More recent university announcements have used the name WVSU Admission Examination (WVSU AE).
We were not able to read a current WVSU page confirming the change, so treat the naming as unsettled and ask the Registrar's Office which term is in use. Practically it does not matter much — there is only one such exam — but it matters when you are searching, because results for the two names surface different vintages of information.
What the guidelines establish about the exam itself:
- It is open to senior high school completers and graduates. The earlier sheet restricted this to graduates of senior high schools recognised by the Department of Education.
- It is administered only once, as scheduled. WVSU states this in capitals in its own document.
- It is university-wide, covering the main campus in La Paz, Iloilo City and the external campuses.
- Only applicants who applied and satisfied the requirements are eligible to sit it.
Applying is a per-campus act
This is the structural point most guides miss. WVSU's guidelines tell applicants to submit their accomplished application forms and requirements to the Registrar's Office of the campus where the applicant intends to apply, and state that application forms for the external campuses are facilitated by their respective registrars.
The online systems follow the same logic. The applicant access module we reached is hosted on a campus-specific subdomain, carries the campus name on its login screen, and offers separate paths for new applicants creating an account and returning applicants logging back in. It also carries a data privacy agreement that applicants — or a parent or guardian, for applicants under 18 — must accept before proceeding.
So the first decision in a WVSU application is not "which course" but "which campus". Get that wrong and the rest goes to the wrong office.
Selection is two stages, not one
WVSU's guidelines describe a system that is closer to how state universities generally work than to a simple pass mark:
- You sit the admission examination.
- Applicants who reach the cut-off score required by the college where they are to be admitted proceed to the next stage of selection — conducted by the college or school, and which the guidelines say may include an interview or an additional test.
- Applicants may still use the test result form for their second and third priority course preferences, if qualified.
- Applicants who do not qualify for their chosen programme are told they may confer with the Admissions or Registrar's Office about possible accommodation in other programmes, or in the external campuses.
Three things follow. First, the cut-off is set by the college, not by the university, so it differs by programme. Second, your result is portable across your preference list, which makes the ordering of your second and third choices a genuine decision rather than a formality. Third, being turned down by one college is not the end — the guidelines explicitly point rejected applicants back to the office for redirection, including to external campuses.
If you want to see how that compares with the way other Philippine universities structure their tests, our guide to entrance exams in the Philippines puts the major ones side by side.
The documents
The requirement set in WVSU's guidelines is short, and its shape has been stable across the two documents we read:
- A certified true copy of the report card reflecting first-quarter grades, or a certification from the principal or registrar that the applicant is graduating in the current cycle
- Two recent identical 2x2 pictures, signed at the back by the applicant
- A duly accomplished application form
The older sheets also required self-addressed stamped envelopes for mailed applications, which is exactly the kind of requirement the online applicant modules exist to replace. Expect the current process to ask you to scan or photograph the same documents and upload a digital ID photo instead.
For the wider set of documents that Philippine universities ask for at enrolment rather than at application, our college admission requirements guide covers the standard list.
The College of Medicine is separate
WVSU's College of Medicine maintains its own requirements and applicant track on its own site, distinct from the undergraduate admission examination described here. If medicine is your target, work from the college's own requirements page and its own applicant announcements rather than from the university-wide guidelines.
Cost
WVSU is a state university, which places it inside the free higher education law covering tuition and other school fees at state universities and colleges. That is not the same as everything being free — application and testing costs, and various incidental expenses, sit outside the coverage, and the exact boundary is worth understanding before you plan a budget. Our guide to free tuition universities in the Philippines covers what the law does and does not pay for.
If you are weighing WVSU against private options in the region, our roundup of private schools in Iloilo is a useful comparison, the campus details sit on our West Visayas State University profile, and the full programme list is in our WVSU courses offered guide.
What to do next
Because the current application window, fees, exam date and cut-offs could not be verified from a readable WVSU page, the only responsible advice is procedural:
- Decide the campus first. Main campus in La Paz, or one of the external campuses.
- Contact that campus's Registrar's Office directly for the current application window and requirements. The registrar is the office WVSU's own guidelines name at every stage.
- Watch for the application module opening. The campus applicant modules post a plain notice when the period has ended, which means they also post one when it opens.
- Order your course preferences deliberately. Your second and third choices are usable, so treat them as real options rather than filler.
- Ignore old PDFs. If a figure comes from a document headed with an academic year that has already finished, it is history, not guidance.
