Courses Offered at West Visayas State University

West Visayas State University spreads its programme list across a dozen college pages and six campus pages, and the two sets do not overlap. If you only read the main academics page you will miss roughly half the university. Here is the whole thing, grouped the way WVSU groups it.

For the address, contacts and level flags, the West Visayas State University profile has them. This post is about what you can study and how you get in.

The shape of the university

WVSU is a state university headquartered on Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City. The main campus carries the professional and health-science colleges. Agriculture and forestry sit on their own campus, and five satellite campuses across Iloilo and Negros Occidental run mostly education, technology and hospitality programmes.

Two naming quirks to know before you search: the unit now called the College of Business and Management is described on older parts of the site as the Institute of Management, and the College of Communication was formerly the College of Mass Communications. Both older names still appear on WVSU pages.

Main campus, La Paz

College of Arts and Sciences

  • Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages
  • Bachelor of Arts in Political Science
  • BS Applied Mathematics
  • BS Biology, with Biotechnology, Medical Biology and Microbiology tracks
  • BS Chemistry
  • BS Psychology

Graduate: MA Chemistry, MA English and Literature, MA English Language Studies, MA Mathematics, MA Physics, MA Social Science, Master of Public Administration, MS Biology, and a PhD in Social Science.

A dedicated BA in Foreign Languages is unusual outside Metro Manila, and it pairs with the university's Center of Foreign Languages.

College of Business and Management

  • BS Business Administration, majors in Financial Management and Operation Management
  • BS Cooperatives Management
  • BS Hospitality Management
  • BS Tourism Management

Graduate: Master in Hospitality Management, Master in Business Management.

BS Cooperatives Management is genuinely rare. WVSU opened it in 1997 in response to demand for cooperative managers, and few universities in the country confer it as a standalone degree.

College of Communication

  • Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting
  • Bachelor of Arts in Journalism
  • BS Development Communication

Graduate: Master in Development Communication.

Note that WVSU splits broadcasting and journalism into separate degrees rather than running one communication degree with majors. If you are deciding between them, our AB Journalism guide sets out what each track leads to.

College of Education

  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
  • Bachelor of Elementary Education
  • Bachelor of Secondary Education, majors in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Values Education
  • Bachelor of Special Needs Education, with Elementary School Teaching and Teaching Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Learners

Graduate: MA in Education across eleven areas including Biological Science, Elementary Science, Elementary Mathematics, Filipino, Language Teaching in English, Mathematics, Physical Science, Physics, Reading, Social Studies and Teaching in Challenged Areas; Master of Education in Administration and Supervision, Early Childhood Education, Guidance and Counseling, and Special Education; PhD in Education (Curriculum Development, Educational Management, Psychology and Guidance); and PhD in Science Education (Biology, Mathematics, Physical Science).

The Teaching Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Learners specialisation is worth flagging. Very few Philippine universities carry a dedicated deaf-education track at undergraduate level.

College of Information and Communications Technology

  • Bachelor of Library and Information Science
  • BS Computer Science
  • BS Entertainment and Multimedia Computing
  • BS Information Systems
  • BS Information Technology

Graduate: Master in Information Technology.

College of Nursing

  • BS Nursing
  • MA Nursing, with Nursing Administration and Nursing Education

College of PESCAR

Physical Education, Sports, Culture, Arts and Recreation:

  • Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education
  • Bachelor of Performing Arts, Dance Track
  • Bachelor of Physical Education
  • BS Exercise and Sports Sciences, Fitness and Sports Coaching

Graduate: Master in Music Education, Master of Physical Education (Dance and Sports). WVSU also references diploma programmes in Physical Education and in Music for holders of a baccalaureate degree.

College of Dentistry

Doctor of Dental Medicine.

College of Medicine

Doctor of Medicine, plus the WVSU Expedited Select Track for Medicine (WESTMED).

College of Law

Juris Doctor, full-time, completed in four years.

College of Agriculture and Forestry

  • BS Agriculture
  • BS Forestry

Both are recognised as CHED Region 6 Centers of Development. Graduate work: Master's in Agriculture, MS Forestry, and PhD Agriculture.

Satellite campuses

The five satellite campuses share a common core and then diverge. This table is the fastest way to see which one to apply to.

CampusProgrammes published
CalinogBEEd; BSEd (English, Mathematics); BS Entrepreneurship; BS Hospitality Management; BS Information Technology; BS Office Administration
HimamaylanBEEd; Bachelor of Physical Education; BSEd (English, Filipino, Mathematics, Social Studies); BS Hospitality Management; BS Information Technology
JaniuayBEEd; BSEd (English, Filipino, Mathematics, Social Studies); BS Hospitality Management; BS Industrial Technology (Drafting, Automotive, Electrical, Electronics); BS Information Technology; BS Radiologic Technology
LambunaoBEEd; BSEd (English, Filipino, Mathematics, Social Studies); BS Criminology; BS Hospitality Management; BS Industrial Technology (Automotive, Electrical, Electronics and Communications, Food, HVAC and Refrigeration); BS Information Technology; BTVTEd (Electrical Technology, Food Service Management)
PototanBEEd; BSEd (English, Mathematics, Social Studies); BS Hospitality Management; BS Industrial Technology (Architectural Drafting, Automotive, Electrical, Electronics and Communications, Food, Welding); BS Information Systems; BS Information Technology; BTVTEd

Two things stand out. Radiologic Technology is only at Janiuay, not on the main campus, which catches out applicants who assume health-science programmes all live in La Paz. And Criminology is only at Lambunao. If either is your target, you apply to that campus, and WVSU's own admission guidance stresses that campus choice is made at application time.

How admission works

The base requirement across the university is the WVSU College Admission Test, written variously on the site as WVSU CAT, WVSUCAT or the WVSU Admission Examination. What is unusual about WVSU is how much screening happens on top of it, college by college.

  • Arts and Sciences requires the College Aptitude Test for the specific degree programme, a personal interview with the AS Committee on Admissions, a medical examination, a high school general rating of at least 80%, and a certificate of good moral character.
  • Communication requires a Senior High School report card with no final grade lower than 80, a passed WVSU CAT, a panel interview and performance tests, and a medical certificate.
  • ICT requires an ICT Aptitude Test and a college interview on top of the base requirements.
  • Nursing ranks applicants on a published weighting: high school GPA 25%, WVSUCAT performance 25%, Nursing Aptitude Test performance 40%, and interview 10%. It also states that no transferee is admitted into the programme.
  • PESCAR adds skills appraisal, motor performance and playing or dancing ability tests, and a music proficiency test for the music route.
  • Business and Management adds a cooperative aptitude test and an interview.
  • Dentistry expects a STEM track background or an allied health degree, a high school weighted average of 85% or better, a CAT score set by the college, and physical, psychological, aptitude, dexterity and cognitive skill examinations. WVSU also notes a Board of Regents resolution giving available slots first to top applicants permanently residing in Region VI.
  • Medicine requires an NMAT result of at least the 70th percentile, a transcript (with a CHED Special Order for private-school applicants), PSA birth certificate, income tax return, certificate of residency or voter's ID, and two certificates of good moral character.
  • Law requires a bachelor's degree from an institution recognised by the Legal Education Board, and entry through the Law School Qualifying Test.

The Nursing weighting matters more than most applicants realise: the Nursing Aptitude Test carries 40%, more than the entrance test itself. If nursing is the goal, our BS Nursing guide covers what the programme demands after admission.

Application windows and test dates move every cycle. WVSU publishes them on its own site and through the IUIS applicant portal at iuis.wvsu.edu.ph. Do not plan around a date from a third-party page. For how WVSU's test compares with other entrance exams, see entrance exams in the Philippines compared.

What WVSU does not publish

Current fees. The Schedule of Fees page carries per-college documents dated to the second semester of school year 2022-2023, posted in December 2022. Those are not current, and the amounts are inside embedded documents rather than page text. As a state university, WVSU is covered by Republic Act 10931, which makes tuition and other school fees free for qualified Filipino undergraduates at SUCs. The law covers fees only, not books, board, transport or living costs. Our free tuition guide has the detail.

CAT coverage and cut-off scores. WVSU does not publish a subject breakdown, item count or per-programme CAT cut-off. Colleges refer to "the CAT score set by the College" without stating it. Treat any published WVSU CAT passing score as unverified.

Satellite-campus graduate offerings. The satellite campus pages list baccalaureate programmes only. If you want a master's degree outside La Paz, ask the campus administrator directly rather than assuming it is not offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colleges does WVSU have?

The main campus in La Paz, Iloilo City lists the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Management, Communication, Dentistry, Education, Information and Communications Technology, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and PESCAR, plus the Center of Foreign Languages and the Integrated Laboratory School. The College of Agriculture and Forestry and five satellite campuses sit outside La Paz.

What is the WVSU entrance exam called?

The WVSU College Admission Test, written on the university site as WVSU CAT, WVSUCAT or the WVSU Admission Examination. Several colleges then add their own screening on top of it, such as the ICT Aptitude Test, the Nursing Aptitude Test, a music proficiency test in PESCAR, and skills appraisals or panel interviews.

Does WVSU have a medical school?

Yes. WVSU says its College of Medicine, established in 1975, is the pioneer medical school in Western Visayas and the second state-owned medical school in the country. Applicants must submit an NMAT result of at least the 70th percentile along with a transcript, PSA birth certificate and certificates of good moral character.

Which WVSU satellite campuses offer which courses?

Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, Lambunao and Pototan all run education, hospitality management and IT programmes, then diverge. Janiuay adds Radiologic Technology and Industrial Technology, Lambunao adds Criminology and Technical-Vocational Teacher Education, Pototan adds Information Systems, and Calinog adds Entrepreneurship and Office Administration.

How much is tuition at WVSU?

WVSU is a state university, so tuition and other school fees for qualified Filipino undergraduates are covered by Republic Act 10931. The Schedule of Fees page on the WVSU site posts per-college documents dated to the second semester of school year 2022-2023, so it is not a reliable guide to current amounts. Ask the Cashiers Office for a figure.

Does WVSU offer law?

Yes. WVSU describes its College of Law as the first and only state university offering legal education in Western Visayas. It runs a full-time Juris Doctor programme completed in four years, with entry through the Law School Qualifying Test and a Legal Education Board compliant bachelor-degree requirement.

Does WVSU offer dentistry?

Yes, a Doctor of Dental Medicine through the College of Dentistry. Applicants are expected to be Senior High School STEM graduates or holders of an allied health degree, with a high school weighted average of 85% or better, a WVSU CAT score set by the college, and physical, psychological, aptitude, dexterity and cognitive skill testing.
