Courses Offered at Technological University of the Philippines

Most Philippine universities make you guess what grades you need. Technological University of the Philippines publishes a grade requirement next to every single undergraduate programme. That makes its programme list unusually useful, and it is the main reason to read the official page rather than a directory listing.

Here is the full list for TUP Manila, with those requirements, followed by how admission works and one distinction that matters more than anything else on this page.

College of Engineering

All four degrees carry the same published requirement: 85 and above general average in Math, Science and English, STEM applicants only.

  • BS Civil Engineering
  • BS Electrical Engineering
  • BS Electronics Engineering
  • BS Mechanical Engineering

That is the tightest gate in the university, and the STEM-only restriction is explicit. If you came from a non-STEM strand in senior high school, these four are closed to you at TUP. Our strand for engineering guide covers why that restriction exists across schools.

College of Industrial Technology

This is TUP's largest college by programme count, and its requirements are more open.

Bachelor of Engineering Technology majors, 75 and above in Math, Science and English, STEM and non-STEM both accepted:

  • Computer Engineering Technology
  • Civil Technology
  • Electrical Technology
  • Electronics Communications Technology
  • Electronics Technology
  • Instrumentation and Control Technology
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Mechatronics Technology
  • Railway Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology with options in Automotive Technology, Foundry Technology, Heating Ventilating and Air-Conditioning / Refrigeration Technology, Power Plant Technology, Welding Technology, and Dies and Moulds Technology

Bachelor of Technology programmes, 75 and above in Math, Science and English:

  • Apparel and Fashion
  • Nutrition and Food Technology
  • Print Media Technology

Also in this college:

  • BS Food Technology, requiring 80 and above in Math, Science and English for STEM applicants and 85 and above for non-STEM applicants

Railway Technology is worth noting. Very few Philippine institutions publish a railway-specific programme, and TUP lists it as a Bachelor of Engineering Technology major.

College of Industrial Education

Every programme here carries a published requirement of 85 and above general average.

Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education majors:

  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial Arts

Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teachers Education majors:

  • Animation
  • Beauty Care and Wellness
  • Computer Programming
  • Electrical
  • Electronics
  • Food Service Management
  • Fashion and Garment
  • Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Also:

  • Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education

College of Management and Multidisciplinary Studies

  • BA Management major in Industrial Management. Published requirement: 80 and above in English, 80 and above general weighted average, ABM, GAS or HUMSS preferred.
  • BS Entrepreneurship Management. Same requirement: 80 and above in English, 80 and above GWA, ABM, GAS or HUMSS preferred.
  • BS Hospitality Management. Published requirement: 80 and above in English, plus a height requirement of 5 feet 4 inches for female applicants and 5 feet 6 inches for male applicants, plus a two-minute introduction video in corporate attire. TUP states that false information about height leads to disqualification from the programme.

The hospitality height requirement is a real, published condition and applicants should know about it before they invest in an application. If hospitality is your target, our tourism versus hospitality comparison covers what the CHED curriculum requires and how the two related degrees differ.

College of Science

All five carry 80 and above in Math, Science and English, STEM only.

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Laboratory Technology
  • BS Computer Science
  • BS Environmental Science
  • BS Information System
  • BS Information Technology

College of Architecture and Fine Arts

  • BS Architecture. Published requirement: 85 and above in Math, Science and English, STEM only.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts. 85 and above general average.
  • Bachelor in Graphics Technology major in Architecture Technology. 85 and above.
  • Bachelor in Graphics Technology major in Industrial Design. 85 and above.
  • Bachelor in Graphics Technology major in Mechanical Drafting Technology. 85 and above.

The distinction that matters most: engineering versus engineering technology

TUP offers both, and the names are close enough to cause real damage if you mix them up.

BS Civil Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering, BS Electronics Engineering, and BS Mechanical Engineering sit in the College of Engineering. Civil Technology, Electrical Technology, Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology and the rest are majors under the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in the College of Industrial Technology. Different colleges, different degrees, different entry requirements.

The reason to care is licensure. Each engineering profession has its own Professional Regulatory Board under the Professional Regulation Commission, and each is created by its own enabling law that sets a degree requirement. Republic Act No. 544, the civil engineering law, states as a qualification for examination that the applicant must be "a graduate of a four-year course in civil engineering from a school, institute, college or university recognized by the Government." Each of the other engineering boards has an equivalent provision in its own statute.

A Bachelor of Engineering Technology is a different degree from a Bachelor of Science in a named engineering discipline. If a PRC engineering licence is your goal, get eligibility confirmed in writing by the department chair and verified against the relevant board law before you enrol. Do not rely on the similarity of the names, and do not rely on this article. Our courses with board exams guide lists which degrees map to which licensure examinations.

Admission: TUPSTAT

TUP publishes its admission requirements as a downloadable document through its enrolment and registration system. What it says, for senior high school graduates:

General requirements

  1. Passed the written TUP Scholastic and Technical Aptitude Test (TUPSTAT) and oral tests
  2. Good moral character
  3. Physically and mentally fit
  4. Met the prescribed admission requirements for the programme applied for, meaning the grade cut-offs above

To apply for TUPSTAT

  1. Submit a duly accomplished application form and two recent 2 x 2 inch pictures on a plain white background
  2. Pay the 400-peso testing fee
  3. Take the test on the scheduled date and time at the identified venue

TUP states applications may be done online, including payment, at its website, or in person at the TUP Admissions Office.

On the testing fee. You may have read that college entrance exams in the Philippines are now free. That is only partly true. Republic Act No. 12006, the Free College Entrance Examinations Act, exempts qualified graduates and graduating students from entrance examination fees administered by private higher education institutions. The law defines college entrance examinations as those administered by private HEIs, and it sets eligibility conditions on top of that: natural-born Filipino citizen, top ten percent of the graduating class, and household income below the poverty threshold as certified by the DSWD. TUP is a state university, so RA 12006 does not apply to TUPSTAT. Confirm the current fee with the Admissions Office, since published fees change.

Transferees from other schools face a restricted menu. TUP's published requirements state that transferees from other schools may apply only to Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising, the education programmes, and Bachelor of Graphics Technology, and must present a Certificate of Transfer Credentials, good scholastic records with no failing grades, good moral character, and a certification of available slot from the department. Transferees within the TUP system have a separate, shorter list of requirements.

Foreign students must meet the programme requirements, submit documents for student visa conversion, present a transcript authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service, take an English proficiency test if they are not native English speakers, and submit a notarised affidavit of support with a bank statement.

TUP publishes [email protected] and telephone 5301-3042 local 603 for the Admissions Office. Our entrance exams compared guide puts TUPSTAT next to the other major state university tests.

What to check before you rely on any of this

  • These are TUP Manila figures. TUP runs as a system with campuses beyond Manila, and the undergraduate programmes page these requirements come from is TUP Manila's. Verify your target campus separately.
  • Grade requirements can be revised. TUP publishes them per programme, which is more than most schools do, but they are policy and policy changes. Check the current page before you apply.
  • TUPSTAT dates are not published in the admission requirements document. They are announced per cycle. Never plan around a date from a blog post.
  • Tuition is not on the programme pages. TUP is a state university, so undergraduate tuition for eligible Filipino students falls under Republic Act No. 10931. There is a separate estimated tuition fees page on the TUP site. Our TUP tuition fee guide and free tuition universities explainer cover what the law does and does not cover.
  • No cut-off score for TUPSTAT is published, and neither are per-programme quotas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades do I need to get into TUP?

TUP publishes a grade requirement per programme. The engineering degrees require 85 and above in Math, Science and English and are open to STEM applicants only. Most Bachelor of Engineering Technology majors require 75 and above in those subjects and accept both STEM and non-STEM. Teacher education programmes require 85 and above general average.

Is TUPSTAT the same as a written entrance exam only?

No. TUP's admission requirements state that senior high school graduates must have passed the written TUP Scholastic and Technical Aptitude Test and oral tests. Both are part of the screening.

Is the TUPSTAT free?

TUP's published admission requirements list a 400-peso testing fee. The Free College Entrance Examinations Act, Republic Act No. 12006, applies to examinations administered by private higher education institutions, so it does not waive fees at a state university like TUP. Confirm the current fee with the Admissions Office.

What is the difference between BS Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering Technology major in Civil Technology?

They are different degrees in different colleges. BS Civil Engineering sits in the College of Engineering; Civil Technology is a major under the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in the College of Industrial Technology. Philippine engineering licensure laws set a specific degree requirement per board, so if a PRC licence is your goal, confirm eligibility with the department and with PRC before you enrol.

Can I transfer into TUP from another school?

Only into certain programmes. TUP's published requirements state that transferees from other schools may apply only to Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising, the education programmes, and Bachelor of Graphics Technology, subject to a certification of available slot from the department.

Does TUP publish height requirements for any programme?

Yes, for BS Hospitality Management. TUP's undergraduate programmes page lists a height requirement of 5 feet 4 inches for female applicants and 5 feet 6 inches for male applicants, along with a two-minute introduction video in corporate attire, and states that false information about height leads to disqualification from the programme.

Does TUP have campuses outside Manila?

Yes. TUP operates as a system with campuses beyond Manila. The programme list and grade requirements described here come from the TUP Manila undergraduate programmes page, so check your target campus separately rather than assuming the same offerings and cut-offs.
