Courses Offered at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology

MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology is a state institution and one of the autonomous campuses of Mindanao State University, and both facts change how you apply. There is no institute-specific entrance exam. There is a system-wide one, and your score on it is weighted against your grades and your household's financial status under a published formula.

This post lists the programmes MSU-IIT publishes college by college, flags where the institute's own pages disagree with each other, and walks through the admission arithmetic. Location and contact details sit on the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology profile.

College of Engineering

The college describes itself as comprising five departments, and its programme page lists eleven bachelor of science degrees:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Industrial Automation and Mechatronics
  • Ceramics Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

This is the widest engineering line-up in Northern Mindanao and includes three programmes that are genuinely scarce nationally: ceramics, metallurgical and mining engineering.

Which of these lead to a licence matters. The Professional Regulation Commission maintains boards for chemical, civil, electrical, electronics, mechanical, metallurgical and mining engineering. It does not maintain a board for computer engineering, environmental engineering, ceramics engineering, or mechatronics. Industrial Automation and Mechatronics is explicitly described by the college as an engineering technology programme aimed at producing multi-skilled technologists, which is a different career track from licensed engineering practice. None of that makes those degrees weak choices, but if your plan ends at "and then I take the board exam", check that a board exists first. Our BS Chemical Engineering guide and BS Mining Engineering guide cover two of the licensed routes.

College of Arts and Social Sciences

CASS states that it offers ten undergraduate programmes, two of which are BS degrees. From its own programme cards:

  • Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Filipino
  • Bachelor of Arts in Panitikan
  • Bachelor of Arts in History, in either the Philippine-Asian History Track or the International History Track
  • Bachelor of Arts in Political Science
  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
  • Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
  • Bachelor of Science in Philosophy (Applied Ethics)
  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology

Both a BA and a BS in Psychology is unusual and worth understanding before you file. Psychology is a PRC-regulated profession, and the degree variant you hold affects your route to the psychometrician and psychologist examinations. Our guide on the difference between BS and AB Psychology explains the distinction in Philippine practice.

At graduate level CASS lists doctorates in English Language Studies, Filipino, Sociology, and Public Policy and Governance, plus master's programmes in English Language Studies, Filipino, Panitikan, History, Political Science, Public Administration and Sociology.

College of Science and Mathematics

CSM houses the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. Its undergraduate degrees are:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, with specialisations in General, Botany, Zoology and Marine Biology
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Science in Physics
  • Bachelor of Science in Statistics

Graduate offerings are deep here: master's degrees in Physics, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Applied Statistics and Statistics, and doctorates in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology. The marine biology track is a genuine draw given the institute's coastal setting.

College of Education

CED holds a CHED Center of Excellence designation for teacher education and runs five departments: Graduate Programs, Science and Mathematics Education, Professional Education, Physical Education, and Technology Teacher Education.

Its undergraduate programmes cover Bachelor of Secondary Education with majors including biology, chemistry, physics, general science, mathematics, MAPEH and technology and livelihood education; Bachelor of Elementary Education; and Bachelor of Science in Technology Teacher Education in industrial technology and drafting technology. A certificate programme for teachers serves graduates of non-education degrees.

All of these lead toward the Licensure Examination for Teachers. Our guide on how to become a teacher in the Philippines covers what the licence requires.

College of Computer Studies

CCS runs the Departments of Computer Science, Information Technology and Computer Applications. Published undergraduate programmes include BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BS Information Systems and BS Electronics and Computer Technology, with diploma-level programmes in electronics technology alongside them.

College of Economics, Business and Accountancy

CEBA states its undergraduate programmes plainly:

  • Bachelor of Science in Accountancy
  • Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management
  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with specialisations in Business Economics and Entrepreneurial Marketing

At graduate level it offers the Master in Business Management with specialisation areas in Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Production Management. Its departments are Accountancy, Economics, Marketing, and Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Accountancy is the only licensure programme in this college.

College of Health Sciences

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

That is the single offering. Note the naming confusion on the institute's own site: the college is titled College of Health Sciences, the academics sidebar calls it Nursing, and its web address still uses the nursing path.

School of Graduate Studies

Beyond the college-level graduate programmes, the institute lists a School of Graduate Studies carrying master's degrees in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, materials science and engineering, information technology, computer science, computer applications, physical education, science education, business management, history, sustainable development studies and public administration, along with a Doctor of Engineering and a Doctor in Sustainable Development Studies.

Where the institute's own pages disagree

Worth knowing before you rely on any single page:

  • The academics page says MSU-IIT has nine degree-granting schools and colleges, while a sidebar on the same page says seven colleges and names Nursing rather than Health Sciences.
  • The consolidated programmes-offered list still shows units named College of Business Administration and Accountancy, School of Computer Studies and School of Engineering Technology, while the current college pages use different names and groupings.
  • CASS says it offers 12 graduate programmes and then lists eleven.

None of these are fatal, but they mean you should confirm your specific programme with the college that owns it rather than trusting the consolidated list. If a programme appears only on the older page and nowhere on a current college page, ask before you plan around it.

There is also no law or medicine college among the listed units. The admissions guidelines do include a category for "College of Law and Medical Students", but the note attached explains these are students taking prerequisite courses at MSU-IIT while enrolled elsewhere.

How admission actually works

MSU-IIT publishes its admission criteria in unusual detail, and reading them properly is the single most useful thing an applicant can do.

Freshman applicants must take the MSU System Admission and Scholarship Examination (MSU-SASE), administered by the MSU-SASE Office through the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in Marawi City, and nominate MSU-IIT as their preferred campus. Applicants then apply through the MSU-IIT admission portal when it opens, uploading documents from the institute's freshmen checklist. Qualified applicants are notified of an offered slot by email and through the portal, must confirm it, and then send hard copies to the admissions office.

Under Board Resolution No. 63 series of 2024, the intake splits three ways:

Share of absorptive capacityTrackBasis
20%Top MSU-SASE scorers who chose MSU-IITSASE score alone
10%Equity, Diversity and InclusivityWeighted, see below
70%Regular admissionsWeighted, see below

For regular admissions, applicants are ranked on:

ComponentProgrammes with an interview or examProgrammes without
MSU-SASE score50%70%
Programme-specific requirements20%—
Grade 10 average10%10%
Grade 12 average10%10%
Financial status10%10%

The equity track is ranked differently: SASE score 25%, financial status 25%, first-generation learner 20%, Grade 10 or 12 average 10%, and other components including PWD status, indigenous peoples, solo parent, parent deprived of liberty, working student and student raised by LGBTQ+ parents at 20% combined. The institute also notes special consideration for exceptional skills in sports and arts.

Two practical consequences. First, your SASE score is decisive but not the whole picture in the 70% track, so a strong Grade 10 and Grade 12 record still moves you. Second, because programme-specific requirements carry 20% where they exist, find out early whether your target programme runs an interview or additional exam.

Transferees have their own bar: those from outside the MSU System must have a recent MSU-SASE rating of at least 90 within the valid academic year of the results, and applicants with at least 30 earned units are preferred, provided 75 percent of previously enrolled units were passed with a GPA of at least 2.50.

What it costs

As a state institution, MSU-IIT falls under Republic Act 10931, the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, which covers tuition and other school fees for qualified Filipino undergraduates in state universities and colleges. That is why the institute does not publish a per-programme tuition table for local students the way private universities do. Our guides on whether college is free in the Philippines and free tuition universities explain the coverage and its limits, including what the law does not pay for.

Foreign students are treated differently and the figures are published: an application fee of US$25 for graduate students and US$15 for undergraduates, a testing fee of ₱150.00, and an alien student fee per semester of US$500 for non-residents or US$250 for residents, on top of tuition and miscellaneous fees that vary by course. Foreign applicants must also submit documents to the registrar or admissions office at least one month before registration starts.

The institute's academics section lists the College of Engineering, College of Science and Mathematics, College of Computer Studies, College of Education, College of Arts and Social Sciences, College of Economics, Business and Accountancy, and the College of Health Sciences, plus the Integrated Developmental School and the School of Graduate Studies.

Do you need the MSU-SASE to enter MSU-IIT?

Yes. MSU-IIT states that senior high school graduates who wish to enrol in any undergraduate programme must take the MSU System Admission and Scholarship Examination, administered by the MSU-SASE Office in Marawi City. Applicants who chose MSU-IIT as their preferred campus then apply through the MSU-IIT admission portal when it opens.

How does MSU-IIT decide who gets in?

Under Board Resolution No. 63 series of 2024, the freshman intake is split three ways: 20 percent of absorptive capacity goes to top MSU-SASE scorers who chose MSU-IIT, 10 percent goes to the equity, diversity and inclusivity track, and 70 percent goes to regular admissions. Regular applicants are ranked on a weighted score combining the SASE result, programme-specific requirements where they exist, Grade 10 and Grade 12 averages, and financial status.

How many engineering programmes does MSU-IIT offer?

The College of Engineering's programme page lists eleven bachelor of science programmes: chemical, environmental, civil, computer, electrical, electronics and communication, industrial automation and mechatronics, ceramics, metallurgical, mining and mechanical engineering.

Is tuition free at MSU-IIT?

MSU-IIT is a state institution, so tuition and other school fees for qualified Filipino undergraduates fall under Republic Act 10931, the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. Foreign students pay published fees instead, including an alien student fee per semester and an application fee. Confirm current coverage with the institute before assuming any specific charge is waived.

Can transferees enter MSU-IIT?

Yes, subject to slot availability and departmental evaluation. Transferees from outside the MSU System must have taken the recent MSU-SASE with a rating of at least 90 within the valid academic year of the results.
