Brigada Eskwela Theme: Where It Comes From and How to Verify the Current One

TL;DR: The Brigada Eskwela theme is written by DepEd Central Office and published in the Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines memorandum issued before each cycle. It is replaced every year. The 2026 theme was Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman, announced in DepEd Memorandum No. 027, s. 2026 dated 5 May 2026, with the week running 1 to 5 June 2026. The 2025 theme was Brigada Eskwela: Sama-sama Para sa Bayang Bumabasa under DepEd Memorandum No. 042, s. 2025. To verify which theme is current, find the Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines memorandum for that year on deped.gov.ph; do not rely on an undated page.

Most searches for the Brigada Eskwela theme are people who need it for a tarpaulin, a programme script or a school report, and who have found four different themes on four different sites. This guide explains where the theme actually originates, gives the recent ones with the memorandum that carries each, and shows how to confirm the current one in about a minute.

Who Writes the Brigada Eskwela Theme?

DepEd itself, through the Central Office. This is worth stating because the two big school observances work differently. For Nutrition Month the theme comes from an outside agency, the National Nutrition Council, and DepEd adopts it; our Nutrition Month theme guide covers that structure. For Brigada Eskwela, DepEd writes the theme, and it appears in paragraph 2 of the annual implementing guidelines memorandum, right next to the dates and immediately above the focus areas.

That placement is not decorative. The theme is the department's framing of what the cycle is for, and the focus areas underneath it are the operational version of the same idea.

Recent Themes and the Memorandum That Carries Each

Two things are visible in that table. The memorandum number is different every year and does not follow a pattern, so searching by number is a waste of time. And both themes carry the same underlying priority: DepEd names literacy as a key departmental priority in each memorandum, with 2025 built entirely around reading and 2026 pairing reading with infrastructure.

What the 2026 Theme Meant in Practice

DepEd Memorandum No. 027, s. 2026 explains the choice in its own words: with literacy remaining a key priority of the department, including the improvement of school facilities, the cycle embraced the theme Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman, "highlighting the power of collective action to strengthen both learning and school environments."

The focus areas that followed match the two halves of the theme:

  • Kaayusan, the order and condition side: preparing clean, safe and learner-friendly environments; repairing classrooms, fixing facilities, maintaining grounds and upgrading learning spaces; enhancing structural safety and climate resilience; and organising clean-up drives.
  • Kaalaman, the knowledge side: supporting reading development by providing materials and engaging stakeholders in literacy activities.

That second half changed what schools were asked to inspect. Alongside the usual assessment of classrooms, water and sanitation facilities, electrical systems, roofs, drainage and perimeter fences, schools were directed to assess the status, adequacy and safety of bookshelves, libraries, reading corners and other literacy support spaces, and could conduct a reading readiness needs assessment to identify learners needing early intervention. Our full Brigada Eskwela guide covers those stages in detail.

How to Verify the Current Theme in One Minute

  1. Go to the DepEd Memorandum listing on deped.gov.ph and look for the entry titled Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines for the year you need. The theme is in paragraph 2 of the memorandum body, not in an annex.
  2. Cross-check with your division memorandum. Schools division offices issue their own Brigada Eskwela memoranda restating the national theme and adding local instructions, kick-off details and reporting deadlines.
  3. Distrust any undated page. The single most common error in Philippine observance content is a theme quoted with no year and no source. If a page cannot tell you which memorandum its theme comes from, it cannot tell you whether the theme is current.

Our guide on how to find DepEd orders and memoranda covers the search itself, including how to tell an official issuance page from a reposted copy.

Timing Moves With the School Calendar

Brigada Eskwela sits immediately before the opening of classes, so its dates move whenever the school calendar does. The 2026 memorandum states outright that it conducts the programme "in accordance with DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026," the three-term calendar order, which is why the week landed on 1 to 5 June 2026 ahead of an 8 June opening. In 2025 the week was 9 to 13 June ahead of a 16 June opening under the previous calendar guidelines. Our SY 2026-2027 calendar guide covers the current structure.

The practical consequence for anyone planning: the theme and the dates are announced together, in the same document, usually in May. Neither is safe to assume from the previous year.

On Tarpaulins, Banners and Templates

We do not publish Brigada Eskwela tarpaulin layouts, banner artwork or streamer templates, and we are not going to hint that we might.

There is one point genuinely worth making to anyone about to print something: a school cannot charge for it. The 2026 guidelines set an absolute prohibition on solicitation, covering any form of contribution from parents, guardians, volunteers, partners and stakeholders, resting on Republic Act No. 4206 as amended by Republic Act No. 5546. If a Brigada Eskwela tarpaulin is being funded by a collection from parents, the collection is the problem, not the design. Our no collection policy guide covers the standing rule.

Disclaimer: the Brigada Eskwela theme, dates and focus areas are set fresh in a DepEd memorandum every year, and division offices add their own instructions. Confirm the current cycle with deped.gov.ph or your schools division office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who sets the Brigada Eskwela theme?

DepEd Central Office, in the Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines memorandum it issues before every cycle. Unlike Nutrition Month, where the theme comes from the National Nutrition Council, the Brigada Eskwela theme is DepEd own and appears in paragraph 2 of the annual memorandum, alongside the dates and the focus areas.

What was the 2026 Brigada Eskwela theme?

Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman, announced in DepEd Memorandum No. 027, s. 2026 dated 5 May 2026. The memorandum says it highlights the power of collective action to strengthen both learning and school environments, with the cycle emphasising school infrastructure alongside literacy development.

Which memorandum do I look for?

The one titled Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines for that year, on the DepEd Memorandum listing at deped.gov.ph. Recent examples are DepEd Memorandum No. 042, s. 2025 and DepEd Memorandum No. 027, s. 2026. The number is different every year, so search by the title rather than guessing the number.

Do themes repeat or carry over?

Each cycle gets a new theme rather than an ongoing one. The 2025 theme was Brigada Eskwela: Sama-sama Para sa Bayang Bumabasa, and the 2026 theme was Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman. The through-line across the two is literacy, which DepEd names as a key departmental priority in both memoranda, but the wording itself is replaced.

Does the theme change what schools have to do?

Somewhat. The theme sits directly above the focus areas in the memorandum and signals where the emphasis falls that year. In 2026 the theme pairing of kaayusan and kaalaman matched focus areas covering both infrastructure repair and reading development, and schools were directed to assess bookshelves, libraries and reading corners in addition to the usual facilities check.

Do you have the Brigada Eskwela tarpaulin or banner template?

No. We do not produce or host tarpaulin layouts, banner artwork or streamer templates, and we will not imply that we do. Advocacy materials for a given cycle come from DepEd through its regional and division offices.

Can a school charge for Brigada Eskwela materials, including the tarpaulin?

No. The 2026 guidelines state that school heads, teachers and other school personnel are strictly prohibited from soliciting or collecting any form of contribution, including Brigada Eskwela fees, from parents or legal guardians, volunteers, partners and stakeholders. The statutory basis is Republic Act No. 4206 as amended by Republic Act No. 5546.
