TL;DR: AB Philosophy is prescribed by CHED Memorandum Order No. 26, series of 2017, and CHED's sample curriculum totals 140 units - heavier than most arts degrees. It runs 51 units of professional courses, 15 units of seminars, 15 units of electives, 6 units of foreign language, and a thesis or oral comprehensive examination with a synthesis paper. There is no PRC board exam for philosophy. The degree feeds three well-worn destinations: seminary formation, law school, and graduate study or teaching.
Philosophy is the arts degree people most often ask about for a reason other than the subject itself. It is the standard academic stage of Catholic priestly formation, and it is one of the most common pre-law backgrounds in the country. Both of those are real, but neither is automatic, and the degree stands on its own terms. Here is what CHED actually requires and where the two special routes fit.
The CHED Order Behind AB Philosophy
The programme is governed by CHED Memorandum Order No. 26, series of 2017, "Policies, Standards and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy Program." It was issued under Republic Act No. 7722 and by virtue of Commission en banc Resolution No. 231-2017 dated 28 March 2017.
CMO No. 26 places philosophy inside the humanities, framing the field as descending from "the historical studia humanitatis: a humanistic education rooted in the great traditions." It describes the philosophy programme specifically as stemming "from the tradition of human search for the true, the good, beautiful and the just," drawing on both Eastern and Western traditions.
The programme goals are stated in three lines: develop critical and creative thinking, empower students to form sound value judgment, and equip them with research skills across disciplines.
CHED names four allied fields - Literature, Languages, Social Sciences and Religious Studies - which is why you will usually find philosophy sharing a college and an elective pool with those departments.
The 140-Unit Curriculum
This is the part students underestimate. CHED's sample curriculum for AB Philosophy comes to 140 units, broken down as follows:
| Component | Units |
|---|---|
| General Education courses | 36 |
| Professional courses (17 subjects) | 51 |
| Seminar courses (5 subjects) | 15 |
| Electives (5 subjects) | 15 |
| Foreign language | 6 |
| Undergraduate thesis / oral comprehensive exam and synthesis paper | 3 |
| PE and NSTP | 14 |
| Total | 140 |
The sample programme of study loads the early years hardest: 23 units in each semester of first year, 20 in each semester of second year, 18 in each of third year, then 9 in each semester of fourth year, when the thesis and remaining seminars dominate.
These are CHED's sample figures. Schools may design their own route to the same outcomes, so confirm the current curriculum with your target department.
The 17 professional courses
CMO No. 26 names them: Logic, Introduction to Philosophy, History of Western Philosophy 1 and 2, History of Chinese Philosophy, History of Indian Philosophy, Existentialism / Phenomenology / Hermeneutics / Post Modernism, Cosmology / Philosophy of Science and Technology, Advanced Philosophy of Man, Epistemology / Theory of Knowledge, Metaphysics, Theodicy / Philosophy of Religion, Political Philosophy / Social Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Aesthetics / Theories of Art, Modern Asian Thoughts, and Comparative Philosophy (East-West).
Two things stand out. The first is that CHED writes several of these as slash-separated alternatives, which is the order acknowledging that different schools name the same course differently - a Catholic university's "Theodicy" and a secular university's "Philosophy of Religion" occupy the same slot. The second is how much non-Western material is built in: Chinese philosophy, Indian philosophy, Modern Asian Thoughts and comparative East-West philosophy are four separate required courses, not electives.
The seminars
Five seminar courses, 15 units: Seminar on Filipino Philosophy, Special Questions in Philosophy, Special Questions in Ethics, Seminar on Contemporary Philosophy, and a Seminar on Plato or on Aristotle. Seminars are small-group, discussion-driven and writing-heavy - this is where the degree becomes genuinely demanding rather than merely long.
The exit requirement
CHED allows two forms: an undergraduate thesis, or an oral comprehensive examination together with a synthesis paper. Which one your school uses is worth asking about before you enrol, because they demand different things. A thesis is a sustained single project; comprehensives ask you to hold the whole curriculum in your head at once. Our guide to writing thesis chapters covers the first route.
Does AB Philosophy Have a Board Exam?
No. The Professional Regulation Commission runs forty-six Professional Regulatory Boards, and philosophy is not one of them. There is no licence to practise philosophy, and nothing stops a philosophy graduate from working in research, publishing, policy, management or media.
Where licensure does enter the picture is downstream. Professional Teachers, Psychology and Guidance and Counseling are all among the forty-six boards, so a philosophy graduate moving into those fields enters through their requirements - education units and the Licensure Examination for Teachers for basic education teaching, for instance. See courses with board exams if licensure is what is driving your whole course choice.
The Seminary Route
CMO No. 26 lists religious vocation among the fields CHED expects philosophy graduates to enter, alongside education, management, government, politics, communication, media and research. That is unusual for a CHED order and it reflects reality: philosophy is a formal stage of Catholic priestly formation, and several of the country's philosophy programmes are run by or attached to seminaries.
The structure is easiest to see in a concrete case. The Archdiocese of Manila's Commission on Formation lists San Carlos Seminary as running formation in three departments: a propaedeutic stage (pre-college department), a discipleship stage handled by the Philosophy Department, and a configuration stage handled by the Theology Department. Philosophy sits in the middle, between the introductory year and theology.
Some practical points if this is your path:
- Requirements are set by the diocese or congregation, not by CHED. A diocesan seminary, a religious order and a lay-run university philosophy department can all offer philosophy, but only the first two are running formation. Talk to a vocation director before choosing a school.
- Not every philosophy graduate is a seminarian, and not every seminarian studies at a seminary college. Some dioceses send seminarians to university philosophy programmes.
- Leaving formation does not waste the degree. A completed AB Philosophy is a completed bachelor's degree, which is what matters for law school, graduate study and employment.
The Law School Route
Philosophy is one of the most common pre-law degrees in the Philippines, and the reason is structural rather than sentimental. The curriculum's first professional course is Logic; its seminars are argument-driven; epistemology and philosophy of language are about how claims are justified and how words do work. That is the daily labour of legal study.
The rules, stated carefully: Philippine law schools admit holders of a bachelor's degree. Admission requirements - entrance examinations, interviews, grade thresholds and any standardised test policy - are set by the Legal Education Board and by each law school individually, and they have changed more than once in recent years. Confirm the current requirements directly with your target law school rather than relying on an older summary.

Other Career Paths
Beyond seminary and law, CHED's own list points at education, management, government, politics, communication, media and research. In practice:
- Academe. University teaching in philosophy requires graduate study, normally a master's at minimum and a doctorate for tenure-track posts.
- Policy and government. Analysis and legislative research posts, usually entered through Civil Service eligibility rather than a professional licence.
- Publishing, editorial and media. Long-form writing, editing and fact-checking work, where the reading load of the degree is an actual qualification.
- Ethics and compliance roles in corporations and hospitals, which have grown as a destination for philosophy graduates.
We are deliberately not printing salary ranges here. Philosophy graduates scatter across too many sectors for a single figure to mean anything, and we would rather leave it out than publish a number we cannot source.
Choosing a Philosophy Department
Three questions worth asking on a campus visit:
- Thesis or comprehensives? Ask which exit requirement the department uses and how many advisees each faculty member carries.
- Which electives actually ran? CHED allows three disciplinal or allied electives plus two free electives. In a small department those can quietly collapse into whatever one professor is willing to teach.
- What is the foreign language requirement in practice? Six units is in the CMO. Which language, and whether it is taught with philosophical texts in mind, varies a great deal.
If the school is religiously affiliated, also ask whether the philosophy programme is open to lay students on the same terms as seminarians, since some are and some are not. For the general question of whether a school is properly authorised, see CHED-accredited schools.
Is AB Philosophy Right for You?
- It is a long degree. 140 units in CHED's sample, with the heaviest semesters in first and second year.
- It is writing-first. Five seminars plus a thesis or comprehensive examination. If you dislike producing sustained written argument, this is the wrong course.
- There is no licence at the end. What you carry out is the degree, your writing, and whatever you did alongside it.
- The two special routes have their own gatekeepers. Seminary formation is governed by a diocese or congregation; law school admission is governed by the Legal Education Board and each school.
- It is genuinely comparative. Chinese, Indian and Asian thought are required courses, not footnotes.
