Cagayan State University, Piat

Cagayan State University was created by Presidential Decree No. 1436, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos on 11 June 1978, drawing together state institutions across Cagayan into a single multi-campus university. The charter was crafted by then-Minister Juan Ponce Enrile. The Piat campus began in 1954, and its founding was contested: the first and second districts of Cagayan both sought the school, and President Ramon Magsaysay resolved it by establishing two, awarding the National School to Piat and the Regional School to Lal-lo. The Piat institution was founded as the Cagayan National Agricultural School, and was converted into a chartered college on 17 June 1961. It later became one of the campuses brought into Cagayan State University under the 1978 charter. Piat lies in the Chico River valley in western Cagayan and is best known outside education for its basilica, which draws pilgrims from across the Cagayan Valley. CHED currently lists 9 recognised programmes at this campus — 9 bachelor's — concentrated in teacher education, arts and sciences and criminology.
