Batanes State College

Batanes State College is the only publicly funded higher education institution in the northernmost part of the Philippine archipelago, which gives it a role no other state college carries. Its history runs through three statutes. Republic Act No. 4009 created the Batanes School of Arts and Trades, which opened to the public on 7 August 1967. Republic Act No. 7927, signed by President Fidel V. Ramos on 1 March 1995, converted it into the Batanes Polytechnic College. Republic Act No. 9314 then converted the polytechnic into Batanes State College in 2004. Its charter directs it to provide collegiate-level occupational, technological and professional training in fishery, agriculture, environmental sciences and related fields — a mandate that fits an island province whose economy rests on fishing and farming and whose isolation makes local provision essential. CHED currently lists 16 recognised programmes at this campus — 16 bachelor's — concentrated in arts and sciences, teacher education and hospitality and tourism. Programme recognition changes over time, so confirm the current offering with the campus registrar.
