TL;DR: Public basic education in the Philippines no longer has a semestral break. DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026 put schools on a three-term calendar from SY 2026-2027, and there is no semester left for a semestral break to fall between. Each term now ends with a two-week End-of-Term Block, which is a working period for grade computation, competitions, professional development and remediation, containing a protected four-day wellness break for learners and a two-day wellness break for teachers. SY 2026-2027 runs 201 class days across terms of 69, 65 and 67 days. In higher education the semestral break is real but institutional: under CHED Memorandum Order No. 01, s. 2011, each college or university sets its own academic calendar.
The phrase "semestral break" is still everywhere, on school group chats, on calendar listicles, and in a great deal of content written for a calendar that no longer exists in public schools. This guide separates the three things people mean by it: the basic education break that was removed, the block that replaced it, and the college break that is still genuinely called that.
Is There Still a Semestral Break in DepEd Schools?
No. DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026, the Guidelines on the Implementation of the Three-Term School Calendar in Basic Education, dated 16 April 2026, replaced the four-quarter calendar with three terms starting SY 2026-2027. The order is explicit about why: a review of the four-quarter calendar found that "the quarterly breaks and short assessment cycles fragment learning continuity, increase teacher workload, and reduce opportunities for sustained teaching-learning engagement."
With no semesters in the structure, there is nothing for a semestral break to sit between. What exists instead is the End-of-Term Block.
What Is the End-of-Term Block?
DO 009, s. 2026 defines it as "the period between terms allocated for grade computation, conduct of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and competitions at the school, division and regional levels, implementation of the ARAL Program, professional development activities, and wellness breaks for teachers and learners." Each term ends with one, and the order sets it at two weeks.
That definition is worth reading twice, because it is the reason the End-of-Term Block is not simply a rebranded holiday. It is where the school does the work that used to interrupt classes: computing grades, holding the parent-teacher conference, running competitions and eliminations, and delivering two days of professional development toward the annual 32-hour minimum set with the National Educators Academy of the Philippines.
| Old four-quarter calendar | Three-term calendar, SY 2026-2027 onward |
|---|---|
| Four quarters | Three terms |
| Quarterly breaks between quarters | Two-week End-of-Term Block after each term |
| Break read as general time off | Working block with a protected wellness break inside it |
| Competitions cut into class time | Competitions scheduled into the End-of-Term Block |
| Report cards after each quarter | Progress reports after each term, distributed at a parent-teacher conference on a working day in the End-of-Term Block |
So Do Learners Get a Real Break?
Yes, and it is a defined one. DO 009, s. 2026 provides a four-day wellness break for learners within the End-of-Term Block "to provide time for rest, reflection, and the processing of learning experiences," with guided asynchronous activities focused on reflection and consolidation rather than new content.
Teachers get a separate two-day wellness break within the same block, after end-of-term activities are complete. The order states that teachers "shall not be assigned instructional, administrative, or extracurricular duties during wellness breaks, except in cases of emergency or exigency of service." It also distinguishes this wellness break from the Wellness Leave granted under DepEd Order No. 002, s. 2026.
Beyond the End-of-Term Blocks, the calendar structure also carries a Year-End Break in the December to January window and the start of the Summer Break after Term 3. Our DepEd school calendar guide for SY 2026-2027 lays out the dates, and our school holidays guide covers how proclaimed holidays interact with them.
How Long Is the School Year Now?
The statutory frame has not changed. Under Republic Act No. 7797 as amended by Republic Act No. 11480, the school year shall consist of not more than 220 class days and shall start not earlier than the first Monday of June and not later than the last day of August. DO 009, s. 2026 works inside that: 200 to 220 total class days, with SY 2026-2027 set at 201 class days across terms of 69, 65 and 67 days.
DepEd issues a memorandum before the start of every school year giving the specific schedule of each term and its activities, which is the document to check for exact dates rather than any static page.
Why Does Everyone Still Say Semestral Break?
Because for a long time it was the right word in two places.
In college, it still is. Higher education genuinely runs on semesters, or trimesters, or quarters, and the gap between them is a semestral break in the literal sense.
In Senior High School, it used to be. Under the 2016 SHS curriculum, subjects were assigned to semesters, at 80 hours per semester, per Annex 2 of DepEd Order No. 21, s. 2019. Our guide to SHS applied subjects documents that arithmetic. Senior high learners and teachers therefore used the phrase accurately, and it stuck. The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum under DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026 and the three-term calendar together ended that structure in public schools from SY 2026-2027; private schools are strongly encouraged to adopt the three-term calendar but may keep a two-semester institutional calendar provided the prescribed instructional hours are met.
Who Sets the Semestral Break in College?
Each institution, within limits set by CHED.
CHED Memorandum Order No. 01, s. 2011, Guidelines on Adoption of School Calendar, issued under the Higher Education Act of 1994, states that in order to encourage innovation and the exercise of academic freedom, higher education institutions "may establish their own academic calendars and set their opening days," subject to guidelines. For HEIs on a semestral system, the academic year must be not less than 36 weeks, or 18 weeks a semester, and regular school sessions must total not less than 200 days per calendar year or 100 each semester, exclusive of holidays, registration days and suspended class days. HEIs on summer, trimestral or quarterly terms must inform their CHED Regional Office of their schedules in writing.
This is why there is no national college semestral break date and never will be. A university on two semesters may break in October; one on trimesters has three shorter gaps in different months; one that shifted its opening to August breaks somewhere else entirely. The only reliable source is your own school registrar. Our college grading system guide covers the other place where institutional variation catches students out.
One Thing This Page Cannot Tell You
Whether classes are suspended today. Break dates are policy; suspensions are weather and local government decisions announced hour by hour, and a static page is the wrong instrument for them. Our class suspension rules guide explains who has the authority to declare one and where the announcements actually come from.
Disclaimer: term dates, break schedules and college academic calendars change and are adjusted for disruptions. Confirm with your school, division office or registrar before planning around any date on this page.
