Courses Offered at Philippine Normal University

Courses Offered at Philippine Normal University

Philippine Normal University is the National Center for Teacher Education, and its programme list reflects that with unusual consistency: every undergraduate degree it publishes is a teacher education programme. There is no engineering, no business, no nursing, no computer science degree. If you want a non-teaching course, PNU is not your school.

What PNU does have that most education colleges do not is a set of ladderised bachelor-and-master programmes you enter straight out of senior high school. Below is the full published list, grouped the way PNU groups it, followed by the admission process, which has more stages than most applicants expect.

Three things worth noticing in that list

The BEEd concentrations are real choices, not labels. PNU splits Bachelor of Elementary Education into four distinct entries: Mathematics and Science, Reading and Literacy, Character and Civic Education, and MAPEH. Most universities offer BEEd as a single generalist programme. If you already know which part of elementary teaching you want, that is a meaningful difference. Our BEEd guide covers what the degree involves elsewhere.

The ladderised programmes commit you early. A Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Science Education is a longer road than a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Science, and it is entered at application time, not later. Weigh that against the fact that PNU also offers the plain BSEd route in Science and Mathematics, so you are choosing between them on the application form. Our BSEd guide explains the standard secondary education path.

Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Psychology and Counseling is one of the few undergraduate entry points toward counselling. Guidance and counseling is a licensed profession in the Philippines that requires a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling before you can sit the licensure examination, so a programme that carries you through both levels is genuinely unusual. We explain that licensure ladder in psychology versus guidance and counseling. Confirm with PNU which master's title is conferred and whether the Professional Regulatory Board of Guidance and Counseling accepts it, because the statute names the degree specifically.

The academic structure behind the list

PNU groups these faculties under the College of Teacher Development: Behavioral and Social Sciences, Education and Information Sciences, Language and Literature, Science Technology and Mathematics, and General Education and Experiential Learning. Separate from it are the College of Advanced Studies, the College of Alternative and Lifelong Learning, and the Institute of Creative Expressions and Human Movement Education.

PNU also runs four campuses outside Manila: PNU North Luzon, PNU South Luzon, PNU Visayas, and PNU Mindanao. The undergraduate admission brochure covers the Manila offerings. The regional campuses publish their own histories and programmes on their own pages, and they do not mirror Manila one for one. If you are applying outside Manila, get the list from that campus rather than assuming.

Admission: four stages, and any missed deadline ends it

This is where PNU differs most from other state universities. It is not a single entrance exam.

Who can apply

PNU's published eligibility covers three groups:

  1. Grade 12 students of DepEd-accredited schools or secondary schools abroad expected to graduate at the end of the current year.
  2. Grade 12 graduates of DepEd-accredited schools or secondary schools abroad who have not taken any college course.
  3. Applicants who completed middle school or its equivalent through the Philippine Educational Placement Test, the Alternative Learning System, or a non-formal equivalency test, certified by the Department of Education. PNU notes all such certificates are subject to evaluation and confirmation.

The grade thresholds

For graduating senior high school students, PNU asked for a certified true copy of the Grade 11 report card and the latest Grade 12 report card, with no grade lower than 80 percent or its equivalent in any subject and a general weighted average of 85 percent or its equivalent.

For Grade 12 graduates who have not taken any college programme, the same thresholds apply to the Grade 12 report card.

For transferees, a transcript of records or certification of grades with no grade below 80 percent, a GWA of 85 percent, and no failed or incomplete subjects.

Other documents on the published list: a certification from the school principal that you are graduating, or a certification of enrolment or registration form; a 2x2 coloured ID picture taken within six months on a white background with a name tag, neutral expression, no eyeglasses or coloured contact lenses, ears exposed unless religious custom prohibits it; and a signed PWEBSS application form.

The four stages

  1. Application. Complete the form through PNU's PWEBSS applicant portal, generate a printer-friendly copy, then submit your requirements. PNU accepted three submission modes: walk-in to the Admissions Office, online through a shared drive folder, or courier to the Admissions Office at Room 104 G. Pecson Hall, Taft Avenue corner Ayala Boulevard, Manila.
  2. PNUAT. The written admission test. Results are announced by email or by online posting of successful examinees.
  3. Interview. Passers fill out an Interview Form, then wait for an assigned interviewer to send a schedule. PNU states that failing to respond to the form means your application stops there and your slot goes to another applicant.
  4. Medical evaluation. Answer the Medical and Mental Health Survey form, then submit to the University Health Services Unit a Physical Examination Form filled out by a registered physician, a chest X-ray taken within six months, and drug test results with an identification picture from a DOH-accredited medical facility.

Only after all four does PNU release the list of official passers, followed by enrolment confirmation and submission of entrance data requirements.

PNU has run the cycle in two batches, each with its own application period, examination date, results release, interview window, medical evaluation window, and confirmation period. Those dates change every cycle and PNU publishes them in the admission brochure and on its admissions channels. The university states that its deadlines are firm, that failure to submit by the specified dates results in automatic forfeiture, and that no exceptions can be made. Take that literally.

For contact, PNU publishes [email protected] and (632) 5317-1768 local 753.

After graduation: the licensure exam

Teacher education graduates take the Licensure Examination for Teachers, administered by the Board for Professional Teachers, one of the 46 Professional Regulatory Boards under the Professional Regulation Commission. A teaching degree from PNU does not by itself let you teach in a Philippine school; the licence does. See our LET guide for how the examination is structured and education schools by LET passing rate for how institutions compare.

If your interest is the Bachelor of Special Needs Education, ask the faculty where recent graduates were hired, since special needs teaching posts sit in a mix of public schools, private SPED centres, and inclusion programmes.

What PNU does not publish

  • Tuition. The undergraduate admission brochure does not carry a fee schedule. PNU is a state university, so undergraduate tuition for eligible Filipino students falls under Republic Act No. 10931. Our free tuition universities explainer covers what the law does and does not cover, including the fees that remain payable.
  • PNUAT cut-off scores. Not published.
  • Slot allocations by programme. Not published.
  • A current-cycle programme list on a stable web page. At the time of writing, PNU's academics and undergraduate programmes URLs return errors, and the reliable published source is the admission brochure PDF. If the list above matters to your decision, confirm it with the Admissions Office directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PNU offer non-teaching courses?

Not at undergraduate level. Every programme on PNU's published undergraduate offerings is a teacher education or education-adjacent degree. Even the Bachelor of Library and Information Science and the Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Psychology and Counseling sit inside education faculties.

What is a ladderised bachelor-master programme at PNU?

Several PNU offerings are entered as a single undergraduate programme that leads to both a bachelor's and a master's degree. Examples on the published list are the Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Science Education, the Bachelor-Masters in Teaching Social Science, the Bachelor-Master of Arts in Language and Literature Education, and the Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Psychology and Counseling.

What grades do I need to apply to PNU?

PNU's AY 2025-2026 admission brochure required graduating senior high school applicants to submit Grade 11 and latest Grade 12 report cards with no grade lower than 80 percent in any subject and a general weighted average of 85 percent or its equivalent. Transferees needed the same thresholds with no failed or incomplete subjects.

Is the PNUAT the only screening step?

No. PNU runs four stages: the written PNUAT, an interview, a medical evaluation, then release of official passers. Failing to meet a deadline at any stage forfeits the application, and PNU states this plainly in its brochure.

What does the PNU medical evaluation involve?

Applicants answer a Medical and Mental Health Survey form and submit a Physical Examination Form filled out by a registered physician, a chest X-ray taken within six months, and drug test results with an identification picture from a DOH-accredited medical facility.

Can ALS or PEPT completers apply to PNU?

Yes. PNU's published eligibility includes applicants who completed middle school or its equivalent through the Philippine Educational Placement Test, the Alternative Learning System, or a non-formal equivalency test, provided the certification is issued and certified by the Department of Education. All certificates are subject to evaluation and confirmation.

Does PNU have campuses outside Manila?

Yes. PNU operates PNU North Luzon, PNU South Luzon, PNU Visayas and PNU Mindanao alongside the Manila campus. The undergraduate admission brochure covers the Manila offerings; each regional campus publishes its own programmes, so check the campus page directly.
