Personal Development (PerDev): The SHS Core Subject

TL;DR: Personal Development (PerDev) is the senior high school core subject that asks learners to understand their own development and use it to make career decisions. Under the core curriculum that introduced it, it runs 80 hours across one semester, roughly 20 weeks at 4 hours a week, in four units: Self-Development, Aspects of Personal Development, Building and Maintaining Relationships, and Career Development. It is not on the list of core subjects DepEd gives for the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum under DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, which cuts the shared core down to around five subjects taken in Grade 11. Learners already partway through the older curriculum continue on it, so PerDev is still being taught while the transition runs.

Most searches for "personal development module" come from senior high school learners looking for the material for a subject they are enrolled in, and increasingly from people trying to work out whether that subject still exists. Both questions have answers, and they are different answers depending on which curriculum a learner started under. This guide covers what PerDev contains, how it is structured, and exactly where it sits after the senior high restructure. For the restructure itself, see our guide to the Strengthened SHS Curriculum.

What Personal Development Covers

DepEd's subject description for the core subject is worth reading in full because it sets the frame:

"This course makes senior high school students aware of the developmental stage that they are in, for them to better understand themselves and the significant people around them as they make important career decisions as adolescents. The course consists of modules, each of which addresses a key concern in personal development. Using the experiential learning approach, each module invites students to explore specific themes in their development."

Three things follow from that. The subject is modular by design, which is why "personal development module" is the phrase everyone searches. It is experiential, meaning the assessed work leans on reflection, sharing and application rather than recall. And its stated destination is career decisions, not self-improvement in the abstract.

The Structure: 80 Hours, One Semester, Four Units

UnitFocus
Unit 1: Self-DevelopmentSelf-concept, knowing oneself, the developmental stage of adolescence
Unit 2: Aspects of Personal DevelopmentThe different dimensions of a person's development and how they interact
Unit 3: Building and Maintaining RelationshipsFamily, peers, and the significant people around the learner
Unit 4: Career DevelopmentTurning self-knowledge into a decision about what comes after senior high

PerDev is a one-semester course of 80 hours, spread across roughly 20 weeks at about 4 hours a week. The number of sessions per week is a school-level scheduling decision, so two learners in the same division can be on the same 80 hours arranged completely differently.

The sequence is deliberate rather than arbitrary: the units move outward from the individual learner to their relationships to their future, and the last unit is the one the whole subject is pointed at.

What Changed Under the Strengthened SHS Curriculum

DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum, was issued on 4 June 2026 for full implementation from SY 2026-2027. It replaces the older track-and-strand structure with two tracks and a much smaller shared core.

Old SHS core curriculumStrengthened SHS Curriculum
15 core subjects across Grades 11 and 12A shared core of around five subjects, offered in Grade 11
Personal Development included as a core subjectPersonal Development not among the listed core subjects
Four tracks with named strands (STEM, ABM, HUMSS, GAS, TVL, Sports, Arts and Design)Two tracks: Academic and Technical-Professional, organised around electives

DepEd's Strengthened SHS materials list the shared core subjects as Effective Communication, General Mathematics, General Science, Life and Career Skills, and a Philippine history and society subject, which DepEd renders in Filipino as Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino. Personal Development is not on that list.

Where the content went. DepEd has published the Life and Career Skills curriculum guide, and it answers this. The subject runs 160 hours over one year at four hours a week, and Quarter 1 is titled "Life Skills toward Personal Development" — covering developmental tasks and stages, examining one's own sense of self, protective and risk factors, and routines that promote physiological development and well-being. That is recognisably the ground PerDev used to cover.

The course description frames the whole subject as "the interconnectedness of the science of personal development, health and wellness, and career readiness". So PerDev content did not disappear; it became the opening quarter of a wider subject that then moves through social competence (Quarter 2), career competence (Quarter 3) and career readiness (Quarter 4).

What the guide does not do is map old PerDev competencies one-to-one onto new ones. If you need to know how a specific competency is treated, read the guide itself rather than assuming a direct transfer.

Disclaimer: DepEd's senior high transition is running in stages and details are still being issued. Confirm what your own school is offering for the current school year before relying on any of this for a subject-selection decision.

So Who Is Still Taking PerDev?

The restructure applies to incoming Grade 11 learners from SY 2026-2027. Learners who were already in Grade 12 in that school year continue under the curriculum they started, which is why PerDev classes are still running while the transition works through. Private schools also have latitude in how and when they align, so the honest answer for any specific learner is the one their own school gives.

If you are choosing a school or a track right now, our explainers on SHS tracks and strands and senior high enrolment cover the decision as it currently stands.

Where the Modules Come From

The self-learning modules that flooded the internet during remote learning were produced by DepEd regional and schools division offices for their own learners, then widely reshared. There is no single national download page for them, and the copy circulating on a file-sharing site is not necessarily the version your teacher is grading against.

Two practical points. Get the module from your school, because the version, the numbering and the activities differ between regions. And skip the answer-key sites, which we do not link. A subject assessed on personal reflection produces nothing useful from a copied answer, and PerDev's activities are among the easiest for a teacher to spot as borrowed.

How PerDev Is Graded

For learners still taking it, PerDev is graded like any other subject on their programme. What changed for SY 2026-2027 is the grading policy itself: DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026 repealed DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015, so component names, weights and the treatment of transmutation are not what older explainers describe. Our guide to DepEd's new grading system covers what the current order confirms and what is still in transition.

What the Subject Is Actually Good For

  • It is where career decisions get structured. Unit 4 exists so the choice of what follows senior high is made deliberately rather than by default.
  • It normalises talking about adolescence. The subject description names the developmental stage explicitly, which is unusual in a Philippine curriculum.
  • It is not counselling. PerDev borrows tools from psychology; it does not make a learner or a teacher a mental health professional. Anything that needs a professional needs a professional.
  • Its outputs are personal. Reflections and journals are the assessed work, which is exactly why copied ones are obvious.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Personal Development (PerDev) about?

DepEd's own subject description says the course "makes senior high school students aware of the developmental stage that they are in, for them to better understand themselves and the significant people around them as they make important career decisions as adolescents." It is built as a set of modules using an experiential learning approach, drawing on concepts and tools from psychology rather than teaching psychology as a discipline.

How many hours is PerDev?

Under the SHS core curriculum that introduced it, Personal Development runs 80 hours across one semester, which works out to roughly 20 weeks at 4 hours a week. How those hours are split into sessions is a school-level decision, so some schools run one long session and others spread it across several shorter ones.

What are the four units of PerDev?

Unit 1 is Self-Development, Unit 2 is Aspects of Personal Development, Unit 3 is Building and Maintaining Relationships, and Unit 4 is Career Development. The sequence moves outward, from the learner's own self-concept, to the different dimensions of their development, to the people around them, to the decision about what comes after senior high.

Is Personal Development still a core subject?

Not under the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum. DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026 restructures SHS around a much smaller shared core, and the subjects DepEd lists for it are Effective Communication, General Mathematics, General Science, Life and Career Skills, and a Philippine history and society subject. Personal Development is not among them. Learners already in Grade 12 continue under the curriculum they started, so PerDev has not disappeared from every classroom at once.

Where can I get the PerDev modules?

From your school or your teacher. The self-learning modules were produced by DepEd regional and division offices for their own learners and are distributed through schools, not through a single public download page. We do not host them and we do not link answer keys, which defeat the point of a subject built on personal reflection.

Is PerDev a psychology subject?

No. It borrows concepts, theories and tools from psychology, but the subject description frames the work as personal reflection, sharing and lectures aimed at the learner's own development and career decisions. It is not a survey course in the discipline and it does not qualify anyone to assess or counsel anyone else.

Does PerDev still count toward my Grade 11 or 12 grades?

For learners taking it, yes, it is graded like any other subject on their programme. How grades are computed changed for SY 2026-2027 under DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026, which repealed the old grading policy, so check the current component weights for your grade level rather than an older explainer.
