BS Molecular Biology: Course and Careers

TL;DR: There is no CHED memorandum order for a BS Molecular Biology degree and no PRC board exam for it. The closest prescribed programme is BS Biology under CMO No. 49, series of 2017 (158 units), which carries Cell and Molecular Biology in its 50-unit fundamental core and lists Cellular and Molecular Biology as a specialisation field. Standalone molecular biology degrees are school-designed — UP Diliman's BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology requires at least 153 units, a thesis, and admits 60 students a year.

If you want to work with DNA, enzymes, gene expression and molecular diagnostics, there are two doors into that in the Philippines: a purpose-built molecular biology degree at the handful of schools that run one, or a BS Biology degree specialising in cellular and molecular biology. This guide explains both and is honest about what the qualification does and does not give you.

The Regulatory Position

CHED has not issued programme-specific policies, standards and guidelines for BS Molecular Biology. It has issued them for the neighbours:

  • CMO No. 49, series of 2017 — BS Biology
  • CMO No. 47, series of 2017 — BS Chemistry

Where no PSG exists, Section 13 of RA 7722 leaves curriculum design to the school, and CHED regulates through the government recognition process for that specific programme. So the first practical question at any school offering a molecular biology degree is: which CHED government recognition covers this exact programme name? Ask, and get it in writing.

CMO No. 47, s. 2017 does formally acknowledge the field: it names "molecular biology and biotechnology" among the specialisations allied to chemistry.

What CHED Prescribes for BS Biology

Because BS Biology is the CHED-prescribed route into the same work, its structure is the useful benchmark. CMO No. 49, s. 2017 sets 158 units:

ComponentUnits
General Education Curriculum36
Biology Tool Courses18
Fundamental Courses50
Specialisation Courses25
Free Electives6
Undergraduate Thesis6
Practicum / OJT / equivalent / apprenticeship3
Physical Education8
NSTP6
Total158

The 50 units of fundamental courses are General Botany, General Zoology, General Ecology, General Physiology, Systematics, Developmental Biology, Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Microbiology, and Cell and Molecular Biology — and the order states that laboratory is required in all of them.

The 25 units of specialisation are where a molecular focus is built. CMO No. 49, s. 2017 lists Cellular and Molecular Biology as a suggested field of specialisation, with these suggested courses:

  • Immunology
  • Recombinant DNA Techniques
  • Radiation Biology
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Molecular Systematics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Genomics and Proteomics

Neighbouring specialisation fields overlap heavily — Biotechnology (health, agricultural, industrial and food biotechnology, bioprocessing, tissue culture, bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics), Genetics (cytogenetics, molecular genetics, human genetics, microbial genetics, developmental genetics), and Systematic Biology (molecular systematics, phylogenetics, population genetics).

The practicum requirement is 3 units with a minimum of 150 hours, which the order says may be offered in the summer before senior level. The thesis is 6 units and includes a seminar course offered in the last two years, where students present a proposal or a progress report.

Our BS Biology in the Philippines guide covers the biology route in full.

A Standalone Molecular Biology Degree in Practice

UP Diliman's BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BS MBB) is run by the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology under the College of Science. NIMBB's own published description gives the shape:

  • A student must complete at least 153 units of undergraduate courses, including an undergraduate research project.
  • The programme admits 60 students per year, taken from the top qualifiers in the UP College Admission Test.
  • A thesis is required before graduation. NIMBB gives the Leticia Shahani Award for the best undergraduate thesis.
  • Course load runs roughly 41 units in first year across two semesters plus summer, 37 in second year, 39 in third year and 33 in fourth year.
  • The first year is general education plus English, mathematics, chemistry and biology; later years move into advanced work in those disciplines plus molecular biology and biotechnology, culminating in research-focused courses in fourth year.

NIMBB describes the degree as providing "a well-rounded undergraduate education that is particularly suited to future careers in research and teaching, in both academic and industrial settings."

Two features are worth noting for anyone comparing programmes. The admission cap of 60 per year makes this a genuinely competitive slot — see our UPCAT guide for how UP admission and campus-course allocation work. And a required thesis inside a research institute is a different experience from a thesis supervised by a teaching department; if research is the goal, ask any school where its undergraduate theses are actually done and on what equipment.

Curricula are revised. Unit counts above are as published by the institutions cited; confirm current requirements with the department before deciding.

Is There a Board Exam?

No. PRC supervises 46 professional regulatory boards. The list runs from Accountancy and Aeronautical Engineering through Chemistry, Food Technology, Medical Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine. There is no board for biology, molecular biology or biotechnology.

That has three consequences worth planning around.

No licence gate means no licence delay. You can work the moment you graduate, and nothing stands between a degree and a laboratory job except the employer.

No licence also means no protected title. Anyone can call themselves a molecular biologist. What differentiates candidates is demonstrable technique — which assays you have actually run, which instruments you have used unsupervised, and what your thesis produced.

Some laboratory roles are legally reserved. Clinical laboratory work in a hospital setting falls under medical technology, which is regulated. If your goal is to work in a hospital clinical laboratory, the licensed route is BS Medical Technology and its board exam, not molecular biology. A molecular biology graduate can work in a research or industrial laboratory and in many private molecular diagnostics settings, but the regulated clinical roles require the licence.

Careers

The realistic employer categories:

  • Molecular diagnostics laboratories — PCR and sequencing-based testing, assay validation, laboratory operations
  • Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies — research and development, bioprocessing, quality control, regulatory support
  • Agricultural and food biotechnology — crop and livestock genetics, tissue culture, food safety testing
  • Research institutes and university laboratories — research assistant and laboratory technician roles
  • Government laboratories — health, agriculture and environment agencies with molecular testing capacity
  • Technical sales and product specialist roles — laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables, where a science degree plus customer-facing ability is the requirement
  • Graduate study — the standard next step for anyone aiming at independent research

Be clear-eyed about the first job. Bachelor's-level entry into research is as an assistant or technician. Project leadership, principal investigator roles and university teaching positions require graduate degrees. That is not a Philippine peculiarity — it is how research careers work everywhere — but it does mean you should choose your undergraduate programme partly on how well it positions you for a master's or PhD, including whether the faculty publish and whether undergraduates get real bench time.

The technical sales and product specialist route is under-discussed and worth taking seriously. It pays reasonably at entry, uses the degree, and does not require graduate study.

Choosing Between the Routes

Standalone BS Molecular Biology / MBBBS Biology with a molecular specialisation
CHED prescriptionNone; school-designedCMO No. 49, s. 2017
AvailabilityA handful of schoolsWidely offered
BreadthNarrower, deeper in molecular techniqueBroader biology foundation, 25 units of specialisation
Flexibility if you change your mindLowerHigher; the general biology core keeps other doors open

If you are certain about molecular work and can get into a programme with real laboratory access, the specialised degree is the stronger preparation. If you are not certain, or if the specialised programmes are out of reach geographically or by admission, BS Biology with a cellular and molecular specialisation reaches the same destination with more room to change direction.

Neither route is a chemistry licence route. If chemist registration matters to you, read our BS Biochemistry guide, which covers the 60-unit chemistry requirement under RA 10657.

Preparation and Cost

The STEM strand is the natural senior high school preparation — see the STEM strand guide. Expect a heavy laboratory load from second year, and expect genetics and biochemistry to be the make-or-break subjects.

Tuition and laboratory fees are set by each school and published on its own admissions pages. State universities operate under free tuition arrangements or, in UP's case, a socialised tuition system. Laboratory-intensive programmes carry consumables and breakage charges beyond headline tuition, so ask for the full schedule of fees in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a CHED memorandum order for BS Molecular Biology?

No. CHED has not issued programme-specific policies, standards and guidelines for a BS Molecular Biology degree. The closest prescribed programme is BS Biology under CMO No. 49, series of 2017, which lists Cellular and Molecular Biology as one of its suggested fields of specialisation. Schools offering a standalone molecular biology degree design it under the academic freedom in Section 13 of RA 7722 and must hold CHED government recognition for the programme.

Is there a board exam for BS Molecular Biology?

No. The Professional Regulation Commission supervises 46 professional regulatory boards, and none of them regulates biology, molecular biology or biotechnology. There is no licensure examination for molecular biology graduates in the Philippines. Graduates enter research, industry or graduate study directly.

What is BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at UP Diliman?

BS MBB is run by the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology under the UP Diliman College of Science. NIMBB publishes that a student must complete at least 153 units of undergraduate courses including an undergraduate research project, and that the programme admits 60 students per year taken from the top qualifiers in the UP College Admission Test. A thesis is required before graduation.

What does CHED's BS Biology curriculum include on molecular biology?

CMO No. 49, s. 2017 puts Cell and Molecular Biology among the 50 units of fundamental courses every BS Biology student takes, all with required laboratory work. It then lists Cellular and Molecular Biology as one of the suggested specialisation fields, with courses such as Immunology, Recombinant DNA Techniques, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Systematics, Bioinformatics, Genomics and Proteomics, and Radiation Biology.

How many units is BS Biology under CHED standards?

CMO No. 49, s. 2017 sets 158 units total: 36 units of general education, 18 units of biology tool courses, 50 units of fundamental courses, 25 units of specialisation courses, 6 units of free electives, 6 units of undergraduate thesis, 3 units of practicum or on-the-job training, 8 units of PE and 6 units of NSTP.

Is there an internship in a molecular biology degree?

It depends on the programme. CMO No. 49, s. 2017 requires BS Biology students to complete 3 units of practicum, on-the-job training or an equivalent apprenticeship, with a minimum of 150 hours, which may be offered in the summer before senior year. Standalone molecular biology programmes set their own arrangements, and some substitute a laboratory research project instead.

What jobs can a molecular biology graduate get?

Diagnostic and molecular laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, food and agricultural biotechnology, research institutes, government laboratories in health, agriculture and environment, and product-specialist or technical-sales roles for laboratory equipment and reagents. NIMBB describes the degree as particularly suited to careers in research and teaching in both academic and industrial settings.

Do I need a master's degree after BS Molecular Biology?

For an independent research career, yes in practice. A bachelor's degree gets you into laboratories as a research assistant or technician; project leadership and university teaching positions generally require graduate study. If a research career is the goal, choose a programme with a real thesis and access to working laboratories.
