AB Sociology: Course and Career Paths

TL;DR: BA Sociology is a four-year degree governed by CHED Memorandum Order No. 40, series of 2017. CHED prescribes seven core courses worth 21 units, a 15-unit research spine that ends in a Directed Research thesis, plus sociology electives, language electives, free electives, PE and NSTP. There is no PRC board exam for sociology - the Commission's forty-six Professional Regulatory Boards do not include it. Do not confuse it with BS Social Work, which is a licensed profession with its own board.

Sociology gets picked for the wrong reason often enough that it is worth saying up front: it is not the licensed helping profession. It is the systematic study of how groups, institutions and societies actually behave, taught through theory and research methods, and it ends in a thesis. If that sounds like the degree you want, this guide covers what CHED requires, what you will actually study, what the licensing situation is, and what graduates do afterwards.

Which CHED Order Governs BA Sociology?

The programme is prescribed by CHED Memorandum Order No. 40, series of 2017, "Policies, Standards and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (BA Sociology) Program." It was adopted under Republic Act No. 7722 (the Higher Education Act of 1994) and by virtue of Commission en banc Resolution No. 231-2017 dated 28 March 2017.

Two dates in the order matter to students. Schools already running the programme were given three years from effectivity to comply fully with the CMO, but the minimum curricular requirements took effect in Academic Year 2018-2019. In practice, every BA Sociology curriculum you will encounter today is built on this order.

CMO No. 40 also does something important that is easy to miss: it is an outcomes-based standard. CHED sets a minimum set of graduate outcomes and offers a sample curriculum, then explicitly allows schools to "design curricula suited to their own contexts and missions" as long as they can show students still reach those outcomes. So two BA Sociology programmes can look different on paper and both be compliant.

CHED defines the field plainly in the order: sociology is "the systematic study of social life, groups, societies, world systems, and virtual communities focusing on the dynamic interplay between individual and society."

What Subjects Will You Take?

CMO No. 40's sample curriculum has eight components: General Education courses, core courses, sociology electives, language electives, free electives, Directed Research (thesis), Physical Education and NSTP.

ComponentCoursesUnits eachTotal
General Education12336
Core courses7321
Directed Research (Thesis)236
Free electives236
Physical Education428
NSTP236

The order names the seven core courses outright: General Sociology, Philippine Contemporary Social Issues, Sociological Theories I, Sociological Theories II, Social Statistics, Social Research Methods I, and Social Research Methods II. Sociology electives, language electives and free electives fill out the rest, and the sample programme of study spreads all of it over eight semesters.

Add up the CMO's own sample programme of study, semester by semester, and it comes to 110 units. That is a floor, not a ceiling - CHED says explicitly that the curriculum "will give space for additional courses," and most universities carry more.

The unit counts above are CHED's sample. Your school's actual curriculum may differ and still be compliant. Ask the department for the current programme of study before you enrol.

The three course sequences that define the degree

Theory. Sociological Theories I surveys the classical theorists - Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Simmel - along with non-Western social theory including Ibn Khaldun and Rizal. Theories II moves to contemporary frameworks: interpretivism, functionalism, critical social theory, structuralism and post-structuralism, feminism, postmodernity. General Sociology is the prerequisite for the first; the first is the prerequisite for the second.

Methods. Social Statistics comes first and requires both General Sociology and College Algebra. It covers descriptive and inferential statistics and introduces statistical software such as SPSS or SAS. Social Research Methods I is the quantitative course and lists Social Statistics as its prerequisite. Social Research Methods II is the qualitative course and lists both theory courses as prerequisites.

Thesis. Directed Research is described in the CMO as the final requirement, where students "undertake independent research under the guidance of a thesis adviser." CHED frames it as the last component of a 15-unit research programme of studies made up of social statistics, the two methods courses and the two directed research courses. Its stated prerequisite is Social Research Methods I and II.

That prerequisite chain is the single most practical thing to understand about this degree. Fail Social Statistics and you can stall the whole methods sequence, which stalls the thesis, which stalls graduation. If research writing worries you, our guide to qualitative research designs is worth reading before third year, not during it.

One more detail from the CMO that students rarely notice: sociology courses "may be taught in English, Filipino and/or other local languages," and language electives exist so students can pick up a foreign or indigenous language relevant to their research.

Does AB Sociology Have a PRC Board Exam?

No. The Professional Regulation Commission operates forty-six Professional Regulatory Boards, and Sociology is not among them. There is no sociologist licensure examination in the Philippines, no PRC identification card for sociologists, and no licence needed to work as a researcher, programme officer, analyst or development worker.

This is the point where students most often go wrong, so it is worth being blunt about the neighbouring degree. Social Workers do have a Professional Regulatory Board and a licensure examination, and BS Social Work is governed by its own separate CHED memorandum order. If your plan is casework, community organising under a licensed title, or any post that requires a Registered Social Worker, sociology will not get you there. Read our social worker board exam guide first if that is the direction you are actually heading.

Psychology sits in a similar position - Psychology is one of the forty-six boards - so if you are choosing between the two social sciences, see our BS Psychology guide. And if licensure is the deciding factor in your whole course choice, our roundup of courses with board exams lays out which degrees lead to one.

What Can You Do With an AB Sociology Degree?

CHED's own statement of career destinations in CMO No. 40 is broad by design. Graduates "could engage in any profession that requires an understanding of groups such as teaching, research, development work in private and public entities (for example, academic, corporate, government, local and international organizations), and/or pursue further advanced training."

In practice that resolves into a few recognisable paths:

  • Research. Survey firms, policy institutes, university research offices, market and social research units. The methods sequence is the direct qualification here.
  • Development work. NGOs, foundations, donor-funded projects, local government programme units. The CMO's own performance indicators include designing research tools and conducting research projects, which is close to what monitoring-and-evaluation roles ask for.
  • Government. Planning and programme offices at national agencies and LGUs. Most of these posts are filled through Civil Service eligibility rather than a professional licence.
  • Corporate. User and consumer research, people analytics, CSR and community relations.
  • Teaching and graduate study. Sociology is a common gateway into a master's or doctorate, and most university teaching posts assume one.

We are not publishing salary figures for these roles. Pay in research and development work varies enormously by funder, contract length and whether the post is project-based, and we would rather leave the number out than print one we cannot source.

How to Compare Sociology Departments

CMO No. 40 sets resource minimums, and they double as a checklist when you are visiting schools:

What CHED requiresWhy it matters to you
Department chair, head or coordinator with at least a master's in Sociology, full-timeProgramme continuity and thesis supervision
At least three full-time faculty with at least a master's in SociologyWhether courses are taught by sociologists or by whoever is free
Suggested class size of 30 to 45, smaller for workshops, readings, thesis and fieldworkWhether you get supervision or a lecture hall
1:1 computer ratio for courses requiring computers, with updated statistical softwareWhether Social Statistics is taught hands-on or on a whiteboard

Ask the department three questions on a campus visit: who supervises theses and how many advisees each faculty member carries, which statistical software students actually get to use, and whether the sociology electives listed in the prospectus were offered in the last two years. Electives that exist only on paper are a real problem in small departments, and CHED explicitly ties elective offerings to "the areas of specialization of the institution."

For the wider question of whether a school is legitimately authorised to run the programme at all, see CHED-accredited schools.

A Real Curriculum, for Comparison

The University of the Philippines Diliman publishes an official BA Sociology checklist through its Office of the University Registrar, approved by the University Council in June 2018 and effective from the first semester of AY 2018-2019. It is a useful sanity check on what the CMO looks like once a university builds it out.

The UPD checklist runs eight semesters and layers General Education courses across the first two years alongside the Socio core sequence, then loads sociology and social science electives into the third and fourth years, finishing with Socio 200 in the final semester. It carries a foreign-language requirement of at least six units in one language, plus the standard six units of NSTP. Economics and Psychology courses appear as required cognates - a reminder that sociology programmes tend to pull in neighbouring disciplines rather than staying self-contained.

Note that state universities admit through their own entrance tests; for UP that is the UPCAT. Private universities set their own admission requirements, so check each one.

Is AB Sociology Right for You?

A few honest filters:

  • You cannot avoid statistics. Social Statistics is a required core course with College Algebra as a prerequisite. If you are course-hunting specifically to escape maths, read courses without math instead and be honest with yourself.
  • The degree ends in original research. Two Directed Research courses and a thesis adviser. Students who like reading but dislike producing struggle here.
  • There is no licence at the end. Your employability comes from your methods training, your thesis, and any internships or research assistantships you take on - not from a board result.
  • The elective list is where the degree gets specific. Demography, urban sociology, gender, migration, sociology of religion - these vary by department and they are what shape your actual expertise.
  • Graduate study is a common continuation, not a fallback. Many research and teaching posts assume a master's.

If you are still weighing options across the whole field, our what course to take in college guide walks through the decision more broadly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AB Sociology have a board exam?

No. The Professional Regulation Commission lists forty-six Professional Regulatory Boards, and Sociology is not one of them. There is no PRC licensure examination for sociologists in the Philippines, and no licence is required to work as a researcher, programme officer or analyst.

Is AB Sociology the same as BS Social Work?

No, and the difference matters. Social Work is a regulated profession with its own Professional Regulatory Board and a licensure examination, and it is governed by a separate CHED memorandum order. Sociology is an academic social science with no board exam. If your goal is to be a licensed social worker, Sociology is the wrong degree.

Which CHED memorandum order governs BA Sociology?

CHED Memorandum Order No. 40, series of 2017, "Policies, Standards and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (BA Sociology) Program." It was adopted by virtue of Commission en banc Resolution No. 231-2017 and its minimum curricular requirements were implemented starting Academic Year 2018-2019.

What are the core courses in BA Sociology?

CMO No. 40 prescribes seven core courses at three units each - General Sociology, Philippine Contemporary Social Issues, Sociological Theories I and II, Social Statistics, and Social Research Methods I and II - for a total of 21 units.

Is there a thesis in AB Sociology?

Yes. CMO No. 40 requires Directed Research, described as the final requirement of the programme and the last component of a 15-unit research sequence made up of Social Statistics, two methods courses and two directed research courses.

What jobs can AB Sociology graduates get?

CHED states that graduates "could engage in any profession that requires an understanding of groups such as teaching, research, development work in private and public entities (for example, academic, corporate, government, local and international organizations), and/or pursue further advanced training."

How many full-time faculty must a sociology department have?

CMO No. 40 requires at least three full-time faculty members holding at least a master's degree in Sociology, and the department chair or head must also hold at least a master's in Sociology and be full-time. This is a useful thing to ask about when comparing schools.

What senior high strand fits AB Sociology?

HUMSS is the most direct on-ramp because it front-loads social science reading and writing. See our [HUMSS strand guide](/blog/humss-strand-guide) for how that pathway lines up.
